Calumet Clinches GLC Title – Tuesday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school hockey last night…

  • Calumet locked up the Great Lakes Conference title with an 11-0 victory over Negaunee. After scoring once in the first period, the Copper Kings erupted for 10 goals in the second frame to end the game early. Tanner Rowe had a hat trick, and Gabe Coppo and Sam Erkkila each scored twice.
  • Jeffers lost to Kingsford 4-3.

In high school hockey tonight…

  • Hancock entertains Kingsford. Pregame coverage will begin at 6:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

In girls basketball last night…

  • Hancock defeated Houghton 46-35.
  • Jeffers shut down Lake Linden-Hubbell 61-18.
  • Dollar Bay-Tamarack City lost to Republic-Michigamme 46-32.
  • Chassell got past Ontonagon 46-41. Paige Sleeman led the Panthers with 13 points.
  • Ewen-Trout Creek fell to Forest Park 45-36.

In girls play tonight…

  • L’Anse travels to West Iron County.

In boys hoops last night…

  • Calumet outscored Ishpeming 65-50. Matt Ojala scored 27 for the Copper Kings.
  • Chassell fell to Bessemer 71-61.
  • Dollar Bay-Tamarack City defeated Jeffers 56-36. Ashton Janke scored 17 for the Blue Bolts, and Christian Hocking had 12 points for the Jets.

On the boys schedule tonight…

  • Houghton tips off at Lake Linden-Hubbell.
  • Baraga plays at Chassell.
  • L’Anse travels to Ontonagon.
  • Ewen-Trout Creek hosts Watersmeet.

The U.P. champion Houghton boys swim team dominated the All-U.P. selections released yesterday. Kevin Beaghan, Davin Evans, Samuel Fang, Colton Haataja and Archer Olson were named to the squad. Tessa Meyer of the Gremlins was named to the girls All-U.P. team. To see the full roster, click here.

Finlandia

The Finlandia University women’s basketball team closed its regular season with a 59-47 victory over Bay College last night. Katie Lundeen earned a double-double, with 18 points and 10 rebounds.

The Lions men’s team finished its campaign with a tough 95-92 loss to the Norse. FinnU built an 18-point lead in the second half, but Bay College came back to force overtime with a shot at the buzzer. Dylan Underwood scored 20 points to lead the Lions. In his final game, senior Austin Carlson recorded the first triple-double in Lions history, with 19 points, 16 rebounds and 10 blocked shots.

The men end their season with a record of 0-21.  The women’s team will open the American Collegiate Athletic Association tournament against Valley Forge University Saturday afternoon in Alfred, New York.

The Detroit Red Wings will host the Chicago Blackhawks tomorrow night. Pregame coverage will start at 7:10 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons return to action Friday, when they visit the Atlanta Hawks.
