Calumet Claims WestPAC Volleyball Tourney Title – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School

Calumet won the WestPAC volleyball tournament on Saturday, defeating Houghton 2-0 (25-9, 25-16) in the championship match. The Copper Kings defeated Gwinn 2-0 (25-7, 25-10) in the quarterfinals, and dispatched Negaunee 2-0 (25-10, 25-12) in their semifinal match. Houghton downed Ishpeming in the quarterfinals, and got past a stubborn Iron Mountain team 2-0 (25-20, 25-17) in the semifinals. Hancock fell to Iron Mountain in the quarterfinals.

On the day for the Copper Kings:
• Helen Beiring had 32 kills, 20 digs, and 7 aces.
• Allie Bjorn had 11 kills, 7 blocks, and 4 aces.
• Caitlyn Strom had 9 kills and 7 blocks.
• Laina Kareniemi recorded 52 assists and 13 aces.
• Kaylie Halonen had 26 digs.

In football Saturday…
• Lake Linden-Hubbell blew past Gogebic 50-0. The Lakes led 38-0 at halftime.

College Football

For the 12th straight year, the Miner’s Cup will reside in Houghton. Michigan Tech defeated Northern Michigan 21-7 Saturday. Will Ark threw three touchdown passes for the Huskies. The Wildcats’ lone touchdown came early in the fourth quarter.

The Finlandia University football team lost 34-0 at Martin Luther College Saturday.

College Hockey

Northern Michigan skates at Notre Dame today.

College Volleyball

The Michigan Tech volleyball team wrapped up the Midwest Regional Crossover Saturday with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-17, 25-19) victory over Cedarville. Jillian Kuizenga had 13 kills, Lina Espejo-Ramirez logged 30 assists, and Carissa Beyer racked up 17 digs.

College Soccer

The Tech soccer team will entertain Purdue Northwest today at noon.

Both Finlandia soccer teams pitched shutouts against Maranatha Baptist Saturday. The men’s team won 2-0. Brendan Christian and Chelan Gonzalez scored for the Lions. The women’s team claimed a 6-0 victory. Erika Lambert scored two goals, including one just 11 seconds into the contest. Addie Budzinski also scored twice. Marissa Schilling and Julissa Barrera each scored once.

NHL

The Red Wings exploded for four goals in the second period, and routed the Devils 5-2 Saturday. Five different Wings scored, and Alex Nedeljkic made 37 saves. Tyler Bertuzzi had to leave the game early in the second period after he was hit on the right hand by a puck.

The Wings entertain the Kings Monday night. Because of NFL football on 99.3 The Lift, coverage of the Wings game will begin at 6:45 on KBear 102.3.

NBA

The Pistons begin their regular season Wednesday at home against the Magic. Listen for selected Pistons games this season on 99.3 The Lift.

In the National League divisional series yesterday…
• The Phillies trounced the Braves 8-3. Philadelphia wins the series 3-1.
• The Padres dispatched the Dodgers 5-3. San Diego takes that series 3-1.

In the American League Divisional Series…
• The Guardians got past the Yankees 6-5. Cleveland leads that series 2-1, with game four tonight in Cleveland.
• The Astros blanked the Mariners 1-0 in 18 innings. Houston wins that series 3-0.

NFL

Today…
• The Packers host the Jets in a 1:00 game.
• The Lions have the weekend off.
