Calumet Blanks Hancock for Homecoming Win – Saturday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school football last night…
• Calumet cruised to a 30-0 victory over Hancock. The Copper Kings improve to 6-2, and close their regular season Friday at home against L’Anse. Coverage will begin at 6:40 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3.
• Houghton’s slim playoff hopes ended with a 26-6 loss at Negaunee. The Miners scored on their first possession, capping an 88-yard drive with a 16-yard run by Easton Palomaki. After a long Houghton drive ended with a failed field goal attempt, the Gremlins recovered a Negaunee fumble and drove 43 yards, with Kaiden Zapolnik running eight yards into the end zone with 56 seconds remaining in the first half. The Miners responded quickly, scoring just 19 seconds later on a Gerald Johnson to Philip Nelson pass to make the score 13-6 at halftime. Second half touchdown runs of 17 yards and 10 yards by Nico Lukkarinen sealed the win for Negaunee. Houghton will conclude its season Friday night at Gwinn. Coverage starts at 6:40 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf.
• L’Anse overpowered Manistique 28-6.
• Stephenson upended Ontonagon 36-16.

• Lake Linden-Hubbell entertains Forest Park. Coverage begins at 1:10 on KBear 102.3.

In high school volleyball last night…
• Dollar Bay-Tamarack City swept L’Anse 3-0 (25-21, 26-24, 25-22).

Calumet, Houghton and Hancock will compete at the WestPAC volleyball tournament today. Games will be held at both Houghton and Hancock high schools. Hancock will begin play on its home court. Houghton and Calumet will start at the Houghton gym. Our broadcast coverage will start around 10:10 on two stations. The third-seeded Gremlins will face Ishpeming on 97.7 The Wolf. The top-seeded Copper Kings will play the winner of an earlier play-in game between West Iron County and Westwood. Assuming either Calumet or Houghton (or both) advance, we’ll broadcast the semifinal beginning around noon on KBear 102.3. Again, assuming that either Calumet or Houghton advance, we’ll air the championship match around 1:30 on 97.7 The Wolf. Start times are approximate, and depend on the length of earlier games.

College Soccer

The Michigan Tech soccer team edged Northwood 1-0 yesterday afternoon. Grace Shaw scored the game’s only goal. Gracie VanLangevelde earned the shutout in net. The Huskies play at Davenport University tomorrow morning.

The Finlandia University men’s soccer team hosts Concordia-Moorhead tomorrow afternoon at 3:00.

College Volleyball

The 25th-ranked Tech volleyball team earned a pair of victories at the Midwest Regional Crossover Tournament in Hammond, Indiana, yesterday. The Huskies opened by defeating Lewis 3-0 (25-23, 28-26, 25-12). They then outlasted the Missouri University of Science and Technology 3-2 (23-25, 25-23, 22-25, 25-17, and 15-13). MTU will face 17th-ranked Hillsdale this afternoon.

The Finlandia volleyball team lost to Illinois Wesleyan 3-0 (25-7, 25-12, 25-15) in their opening match at the Wisconsin-Eau Claire tournament yesterday. The Lions face the host team this morning, and Wisconsin-La Crosse this afternoon.

College Hockey

The Michigan Tech hockey team fell to Notre Dame 2-1 in overtime last night. Cam Burke put the Fighting Irish on the board midway through the second period. The Huskies forced overtime when Ryland Mosely found the net in the final minute of regulation. Burke’s second goal of the night in the extra period ended the contest. Blake Pietila made 28 saves. The Huskies will entertain the US National Under-18 Development Team in an exhibition this evening at 7:07.

The Northern hockey team defeated the US National Team 5-3 last night, and hosts Notre Dame this evening.

The Finlandia women’s hockey team welcomes the Hockey Training Institute Stars from Ontario for an exhibition tonight at 5:00.

College Football

The Michigan Tech football team plays at Northern Michigan in the annual Miner’s Cup game today at noon.

Today’s Finlandia football game against Martin Luther University has been canceled.

College Softball

The Finlandia University softball team will play a doubleheader against Bay College today at 1:30 at the Houghton High School field.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings entertain the Vancouver Canucks tonight. Coverage begins at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift. Dylan Larkin will miss the game. He’s been suspended for one contest for punching Tampa Bay’s Mathieu Joseph in Thursday’s loss. It does not appear that any action will be taken against Joseph, who initiated the fight.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons downed the Philadelphia 76ers 112-108 in their final preseason game last night. Jerami Grant scored 24 for Detroit. The Pistons open the regular season Wednesday night at home against the Chicago Bulls. Coverage will begin at 6:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

The Houston Astros held off the Boston Red Sox 5-4 to take the opening game of the American League Championship Series last night. Game two will be played in Houston this afternoon.

The National League Championship Series begins tonight, with the Atlanta Braves hosting the Los Angeles Dodgers.

NFL

In the NFL tomorrow…
• The Detroit Lions host the Cincinnati Bengals in a 1:00 game. Hear the broadcast on 99.3 The Lift.
• The Green Bay Packers visit the Chicago Bears in a 1:00 contest.
