High School
In high school baseball yesterday…
– In Division Four, Jeffers lost a 4-2 decision to Ironwood in the district tournament at Ironwood yesterday. Carson Turner pitched a complete game for the Jets, who were held to just four hits. The Red Devils will face L’Anse in the district semi-finals in Ironwood on Friday. Hancock and Norway will meet in the other semifinal.
– In Division Three, Calumet advanced to the district semifinals with a 5-2 victory over Houghton yesterday. Alex Voelker drove in three runs for the Copper Kings, and Russ Bjorn scored twice. Calumet will take on Negaunee Saturday in Gladstone in the first district semifinal. We’ll broadcast that game on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com. If the Copper Kings wins, we’ll also broadcast the district championship game. Gladstone and Superior Central will meet in the other semifinal.
In softball…
– In the Division Four tournament at Ironwood, L’Anse fell to Norway 12-3, and Baraga lost to Ironwood 8-3 in a game that was called after six innings because of rain.
– At the boneyard in Lake Linden, Hancock broke open a close game with nine runs in the sixth inning, and eliminated Lake Linden-Hubbell 19-9. Mackenzie Brunet homered Hancock. Peyton Gast and Jana Hendrickson hit home runs for the Lakes. Jeffers will face Norway in the first district semifinal Friday at Ironwood. Hancock will play Ironwood in the second semifinal. We will broadcast both of those semifinals, and the championship game if it includes one or both of our local teams.
– In Division Three, Calumet’s season ended with a 5-0 loss to Gladstone. The Braves will face Iron Mountain in the second semifinal game at Gladstone on Saturday. Houghton will take on Westwood in the first semifinal on Saturday.

MLB
The Detroit Tigers blasted five home runs last night, but still lost a wild 11-9 game to the Los Angeles Angels. The Angels struck early, scorching Anibal Sanchez for six runs in the first three innings, and adding three more off Warwick Saupold to take a 9-2 lead after the fourth. Detroit came back. Miguel Cabrera and Justin Upton had homered in the first and second innings. J.D. Martinez hit a two-run shot in the sixth. Ian Kinsler brought Detroit within a run with his first career grand slam in the seventh inning, and Victor Martinez’ solo shot in the eighth tied the game. The Angels responded with a two-run homer by C.J. Cron in the bottom of the ninth off Mark Lowe to take the win.
The Tigers have lost four in a row, and wrap up that series in Los Angeles this evening. Michael Fulmer will pitch against Matt Shoemaker. Hear the first pitch at 7:05 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
The Milwaukee Brewers fell to the St. Louis Cardinals 10-3 last night. Wily Peralta struggled through five innings, giving up three runs on nine hits. St. Louis broke the game open with five runs in the eighth inning.
The Brewers host the Cardinals again this afternoon. Zach Davies will pitch against Jaime Garcia.
Twilight Baseball League
In Copper Country Twilight Baseball League play last night…
– Dean Kangas-State Farm scored four runs in the first inning, and five in the second, and cruised past Superior National Bank-Stanton 13-3 in a game that ended after six innings because of the mercy rule. Dave Wesa went the distance for the win, and Owen Kariniemi hit a three-run homer for State Farm.
– Wolverine-Orbit scored nine runs in the fourth inning, and pounded Pat’s Foods-Mosquito Inn 9-2. Coy Budweg struck out eight over five innings to get the win. Zach Hill drove in three runs for Wolverine.
Copper Country Horseshoe League
On the opening night of play in the Copper Country Horseshoe League…
– Calumet One blanked Drift Inn 9-0.
– L and L shut out Fat Lil Bandits 9-0.
– Harter’s Party Store defeated Harter’s Carquest 8-1.
– Luigi’s downed Gasoline Alley 8-1
– Ahmeek Fire Department stopped Calumet Electronics 6-3.
– Dreamland Two edged Dreamland One 5-4.
NHL
The NHL Stanley Cup final between the Penguins and the Sharks continues tonight. San Jose won the opening game of the series on Monday.
NBA
The NBA championship series between the Warriors and Cavaliers begins tomorrow night.
Copper Country hockey will be in the spotlight tonight on the Viceland television channel. The VICE World of Sports will feature the Gibson Cup, its history, and the teams and individuals that have played for it. It premieres at 11:00. Charter Cable’s channel guide indicates Viceland is on channel 168, and is available to Silver and Gold level subscribers, but not to those who have the standard package. You can also watch the program on the VICE website, but only if you subscribe to the channel through a cable or satellite provider.
