Calumet Baseball Drops Title Game at Negaunee Tourney – Sunday Sports Wrap

In baseball yesterday at the Negaunee tournament, L’Anse fell to the host Miners 17-3. Houghton lost to Calumet 5-2, and defeated L’Anse 11-1. Calumet then fell to Negaunee in the title game 12-5.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers split their day-night doubleheader against the Minnesota Twins yesterday, winning the early game 5-3, and dropping the evening contest 8-3.

Ronny Rodriguez homered twice in the first game. John Hicks’ solo shot in the ninth broke a 3-3 tie, and Christin Stewart’s RBI single provided an insurance run. Spencer Turnbull pitched into the sixth inning, and was charged with two runs. Shane Greene earned his 14th save.

The Tigers called Gregory Soto up from Double-A Erie to start the second game, which was a make up for an earlier rain-out. He struggled into the fifth inning, giving up seven runs on nine hits. Jeimer Candelario homered for Detroit. Soto was used as the 26th man Major League Baseball allows to be added to the roster for doubleheaders. He will head back to the Seawolves.

The Tigers will play at Minnesota again this afternoon. Daniel Norris will start against Martín Pérez. Pregame coverage will begin at 1:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Tigers have brought pitcher Blaine Hardy off the injured list, and sent reliever Eduardo Jiménez back to Toledo. Pitcher Drew VerHagen has cleared waivers after having been designated for assignment, and has also been assigned to Toledo.

The Milwaukee Brewers fell to the Chicago Cubs 2-1 in 15 innings yesterday. Hernán Pérez’ solo home run in the top of the fifth inning game the Crew a brief lead. The Cubs tied it with a run off Zach Davies in the bottom of the fifth. Davies pitched into the seventh, and scattered six hits. Willson Contreras’ home run off Burch Smith in the bottom of the 15th was the game-winner.

The Brewers play at Chicago again tonight. Jhoulys Chacín will pitch against Jon Lester.

Ryan Braun missed yesterday’s game with a sore hamstring. He’s considered day-to-day.

NHL

In the NHL Stanley Cup playoffs, the San Jose Sharks opened Western Conference final last night with a 6-3 win over the Saint Louis Blues.

The Eastern Conference final continues this afternoon, as the Boston Bruins host the Carolina Hurricanes. Boston leads that series 1-0.

NBA

In NBA playoff action today…
– The Denver Nuggets entertain the Portland Trail Blazers. That series is tied 3-3.
– The Philadelphia 76ers visit the Toronto Raptors. That set is tied 3-3.
