Calumet Baseball Defeats IM, Falls to Negaunee – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School
In high school baseball yesterday at Negaunee…
– Calumet defeated Iron Mountain 6-5, and lost to Negaunee 8-4.
– L’Anse lost to Negaunee 5-2, and fell to Iron Mountain 8-6.

In softball yesterday at Calumet, Westwood blanked Houghton 3-0, and defeated Calumet 8-4.

MLB
The Detroit Tigers split their doubleheader with the Seattle Mariners yesterday. José Iglesias his a two-run homer in their 4-3 victory in the first game. Matthew Boyd pitched into the seventh, and gave up just three hits. He was charged with all three Seattle runs. Shane Greene loaded the bases in the ninth, but worked his way out of the jam, and earned the save.

In the nightcap, Michael Fulmer battled control problems, as the Tigers fell 9-5. Fulmer gave up two home runs, and was charged with six runs before leaving in the fifth inning. John Hicks homered for Detroit.

The Tigers and Mariners wrap up that series this afternoon. Blaine Hardy will start for Detroit in place of the injured Jordan Zimmermann. James Paxton will counter for Seattle. Pregame coverage will begin at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Tigers have brought reliever Louis Coleman up from Toledo. He replaces reliever Johnny Barbato on the roster. Barbato was sent down. Detroit also called up Ryan Carpenter to use as their 26th player in the second game of yesterday’s doubleheader.

Detroit outfielder Nicholas Castellanos was hit on the hand by a Félix Hernández pitch while batting in the first inning of yesterday’s game. He suffered a badly bruised pinkie finger, but x-rays showed no structural damage. He’s considered day-to-day.

The Milwaukee Brewers collected just five hits in a 4-0 loss to the Colorado Rockies. With scheduled starter Chase Anderson ill, Brent Suter moved up a day in the rotation to pitch for Milwaukee. He gave up all four Colorado runs over five innings, and took the loss.

That series wraps up in Colorado today. Freddy Peralta will make his major league debut in a spot start for the Brewers. Jon Gray will pitch for the Rockies.

The Brewers also brought up reliever Alec Asher for yesterday’s game, then sent him back to Colorado Springs, and summoned Jorge López. Reliever Jacob Barnes was sent down to Colorado Springs to make room for Peralta. Starter Wade Miley has been moved to the 60-day disabled list.

NHL
In the NHL playoffs last night, Winnipeg drew first blood in the Western Conference finals, with a 4-2 win over Las Vegas. Game two of that series will be played tomorrow night.

The Eastern Conference finals continue tonight, as Washington skates at Tampa Bay. The Capitals lead that series 1-0.
