Calumet Advances to Hockey Semis – Thursday Sports Wrap

High School

Calumet advanced to the state hockey tournament semifinals with a 6-0 victory over Alpena last night. Jackson Rilei scored five goals, and added one assist. Dean Loukus had five assists, and Nolan Sturos had a goal and two assists. Aksel Loukus stopped 11 shots to earn the shutout. The Copper Kings will face Chelsea in the semifinals tomorrow afternoon. Cranbrook and Flint Powers Catholic will meet in the other semifinal tomorrow morning.

In girls basketball tournament action last night…
• In the Division Two district title game, Houghton’s season ended with a tough 54-50 loss to Escanaba.
• In Division Three semifinals, Negaunee eliminated Hancock 53-48. Calumet staved off a determined L’Anse team 67-63. The Purple Hornets led most of the game, until Calumet mounted a late charge. Elli Djerf led the Copper Kings with 24 points, and Marybeth Halonen added 22. Taylor Sanregret paced L’Anse with 24 points, and Maija Rice had 20. The Copper Kings and Miners will play for the district title tomorrow night at Calumet. Coverage will begin at 6:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
• In Division Four District 98 semifinals, Baraga smothered Lake Linden-Hubbell 57-11. Rylie Koskinen scored 18 for the Vikings. Ontonagon outscored Chassell 45-34. The Vikings and Gladiators will play for the district title tomorrow night.
• In Division Four District 97, Ewen-Trout Creek overpowered Watersmeet 60-10. Ironwood eliminated Wakefield-Marenisco 53-36. The Panthers and Red Devils will play for the district title tomorrow night.

In boys high school basketball tournament semifinals tonight…
• In Division Three, L’Anse plays at Jeffers. Coverage will begin at 6:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com. Ironwood hosts Westwood in the other semifinal.
• In Division Four, District 98, Lake Linden-Hubbell will play at Dollar Bay Tamarack City. Chassell plays at Republic-Michigamme.
• In Division Four, District 97, Wakefield-Marenisco plays at Ewen-Trout Creek. Watersmeet will face Bessemer.

College Football

The Finlandia University football team has added another recruit. Jamal Duncan is a receiver from Brunswick, Georgia.

College Softball

The Finlandia softball team has also added a new player. Alexandra Berg is a transfer from Santa Barbara City College.

College Baseball

The Finlandia baseball team is scheduled to play a doubleheader at Wisconsin-Stevens Point this afternoon.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings visit the Nashville Predators tonight. Coverage begins at 7:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Former Michigan Tech defenseman Matt Roy has signed a three-year contract extension with the Los Angeles Kings.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons fell to the Indiana Pacers 116-111 last night. Jerami Grant scored 26.

The NBA trade deadline is 3:00 this afternoon.

MLB

In Grapefruit League play, the Detroit Tigers beat the Philadelphia Phillies 4-1 yesterday. José Ureña gave up a run on five hits, while pitching into the fifth inning. Robbie Grossman homered.

The Tigers face the Toronto Blue Jays this evening. Casey Mize will start for Detroit. 

In Cactus League action, the Milwaukee Brewers lost to the Colorado Rockies 9-8 yesterday. Adrian Houser was rocked for seven runs on nine hits before leaving in the fourth inning. Kolton Wong, Christian Yelich and Travis Shaw homered.

The Brewers will play the San Francisco Giants tonight. Brett Anderson is scheduled to start.
