Calumet Advances to Hockey Quarterfinals

High School

Calumet earned a berth in the state high school hockey tournament quarterfinals, with a 5-1 victory over Houghton last night. The Copper Kings spotted the Gremlins an early Niko Rajala goal, the scored five straight to claim the regional title. Alex Mattila had two goals and two assists for Calumet. Tanner Rowe, Dean Loukus and Scott Loukus also scored.

Calumet will face Gaylord Saturday at 1:00 in the state quarterfinals at Marquette. Gaylord eliminated Sault Ste, Marie 5-0 last night. Our pregame coverage will begin at 12:35 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

In girls high school basketball tournament action last night…

 – In Division Two – Houghton’s season ended with a tough 58-57 overtime loss to Escanaba. Maryellen Trewhella had 25 points for the Gremlins. Escanaba will face Gladstone for the district title tomorrow night.

 – In Division Three…
– Hancock overcame a big halftime deficit, and eliminated West Iron County 47-42. D’Andra Kero powered the Bulldogs with 22 points.
Calumet took control in the second quarter, and cruised past Iron Mountain 66-33. Marybeth Halonen led the Copper Kings with 20 points. Alexis Strom added 14, and Elli Djerf scored 13.

– In Division Four, District 98 – Baraga eliminated Jeffers 38-22. Chassell defeated Lake Linden-Hubbell 52-24. Paige Sleeman scored 15 for the Panthers. Baraga will host Chassell for the district title tomorrow night at 7:00.

– In Division Four, District 97 – L’Anse overpowered Watersmeet 67-32. Maija Rice scored 24 for the Purple Hornets. Ewen-Trout Creek dispatched Bessemer 65-23. The Hornets will host the Panthers tomorrow for the district title at 7:00.

The boys regular season wraps up tonight…

– Houghton entertains Westwood.
– Chassell plays at Lake Linden-Hubbell on Parents Night.
– Jeffers visits Dollar Bay-Tamarack City.
– Baraga welcomes Ontonagon.
– L’Anse hosts Bessemer.

Finlandia University

Yesterday in Florida, the Finlandia softball team fell to Kenyon College 8-0, then lost to Grove City College 7-4. Harlie Caster and Rheanna Bain each had two hits in the second game.

The Lions take on Clark College and Lehman College today.

The Finlandia baseball team lost twice to St. John’s of Minnesota yesterday, 6-2 and 18-0.

The Lions have today off. 

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings host the Chicago Blackhawks tomorrow. Coverage begins at 7:10 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons lost 114-107 to the Oklahoma City Thunder last evening. Christian Wood scored a career-best 29 points for Detroit. Jordan McRae added 15, just hours after he was claimed off waivers from the Denver Nuggets.

The Pistons host the Utah Jazz Saturday. Coverage begins at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

McRae will fill Derrick Rose’s roster spot, while Rose misses time with a sprained ankle.

MLB

In spring baseball, the Detroit Tigers outslugged the Boston Red Sox 13-9 yesterday. Frank Schwindel hit two home runs for Detroit. C.J. Cron, Niko Goodrum and Eric Haase also went deep. Starter Ivan Nova gave up five runs over three innings.

The Tigers face the New York Yankees this afternoon.

The Milwaukee Brewers fell to the Chicago White Sox 5-1 yesterday. Keston Hiura homered.Brandon Woodruff started, and gave up a run over three frames.

The Brewers play the Cincinnati Reds today.
