In the high school football playoffs 11-player district semifinals…
• In Division Six, Calumet defeated Menominee 35-20 last night. The Copper Kings led 21-20 at halftime on the strength of two touchdown runs by Dryden Nelson and one by Alan Bjorn. Calumet then shut the Maroons down in the second half to win their eighth straight game. Negaunee dispatched Gladstone 42-28 in the other district semifinal. The Copper Kings will face the Miners for the district title next weekend in Negaunee. Hear the broadcast on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3.

• In Division Three, Marquette lost 37-6 at Mount Pleasant.

• In Division One, Rudyard eliminated Munising 38-14 last night. Newberry defeated Pickford 32-14. The Bulldogs and Indians will play for the regional title next weekend.

The Michigan Tech football team visits 7th-ranked Grand Valley State today.
The NMU football team plays at top-ranked Ferris State.
The Finlandia University football team plays at Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri.
College Hockey
Brian Halonen scored twice, as the 18th-ranked Tech hockey team blanked Clarkson 3-0 last night. Both of Halonen’s goals came in the second period. Ryland Mosely added a late empty-netter. Blake Pietila made 22 saves. The Huskies skate at Clarkson again tonight.
The Northern hockey team lost 4-2 at third-ranked Minnesota State last night. Those teams skate in Mankato again this evening.
The Finlandia women’s hockey team dropped a 4-1 decision to Saint Catherine last evening. Jayde Pederson scored the Lions’ only goal. Kayla Savoie-Penton made 34 saves, and took the loss in net. Those teams skate again this afternoon at 1:00 at the Houghton County Arena.
The Finlandia men’s team lost 2-1 to Wisconsin-River Falls last night. Sheldon Brett scored for the Lions. Marcus Gloss made 32 saves. Those teams meet again today at 4:00 at the Houghton County Arena.
College Soccer
The Finlandia University women’s soccer team shut down Mount Mary University 5-0 yesterday afternoon. Katie Brown scored the eventual game-winner just two minutes into the contest. Julissa Barrera, Morgan Campbell, Marissa Schilling and Maddy Waterman added scores for the Lions. Mikayla Brown had to make just two saves to earn the shutout in net. The Lions conclude their season this afternoon at Mills College.
The MTU soccer team hosts Saginaw Valley State tomorrow at noon.
College Volleyball
The Michigan Tech volleyball team plays at Northern Michigan today at 4:00.
NHL
The Detroit Red Wings took the unbeaten Florida Panthers into overtime last night, but wound up with a 3-2 loss. Playing in their first game since coach Joel Quenneville resigned, the Panthers opened an early two-goal lead. Tallies by Sam Gagner and Pius Suter forced the extra period. Aleksander Barkov netted the game-winner. Alex Nedeljkovic made 30 saves. The Wings visit the Toronto Maple Leafs tonight. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Wings will play tonight’s game, and Tuesday’s contest at Montreal, without Tyler Bertuzzi. Bertuzzi continues to refuse to take the COVID-19 vaccine, which means he can’t cross the Canadian border. He will not be paid for the games he misses, and will be responsible for his own travel costs to rejoin the team in Boston Thursday.

The Detroit Pistons host the Orlando Magic tonight.
MLB
The Atlanta Braves carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning, and blanked the Houston Astros 2-0 last night. The Braves lead the World Series 2-1, with game four set for tonight in Atlanta.
NFL
Tomorrow, the Detroit Lions host the Philadelphia Eagles in a 1:00 game. Hear the broadcast on 99.3 The Lift.
The Green Bay Packers’ victory over the Arizona Cardinals Thursday night has proved a costly one. Green Bay coach Matt LaFleur confirmed yesterday that tight end Robert Tonyan and running back Kylin Hill will miss the rest of the season. Both suffered knee injuries in Thursday’s game.
