The Hancock High School hockey team is celebrating its first state championship since 1999. The Bulldogs defeated Cranbrook 2-1 in overtime in the semifinals Friday afternoon, then downed Grand Rapids Catholic Central 4-2 in the title game on Saturday. Alex Nordstrom scored the game-winner on Friday, and had two goals in Saturday’s win. The team is expected to arrive at Hancock High School around 4:00 this afternoon. The Lake Linden-Hubbell boys basketball team will face defending state champion North Central in the Class D regional semifinal Monday night at 6:00 at Negaunee. The Lakes advanced with a 58-48 victory over Chassell Friday night. Lucas Klein scored 21 points for the Lakes.
In Class C, Calumet will meet Westwood in the regional semifinal. The Patriots stunned Ishpeming 51-47 to win their district title Friday night. The regional semifinal game will tip off at 5:00 Monday afternoon. Our pregame coverage will begin around 4:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

The Michigan Tech hockey team advanced to the WCHA Final Five by defeating Alaska 5-3 Saturday night. The Nanooks took an early lead, but Tech responded with four straight goals by Alex Petan, Reid Sturos, Alex Gillies and Joel L’Esperance. Alaska scored twice to cut the Tech lead to one, until Malcolm Gould sealed the win with a late empty-netter. The Huskies routed the Nanooks 7-1 on Friday. MTU will play in the WCHA semifinals next Friday in Grand Rapids. Their opponent has not yet been determined.

The Northern Michigan University hockey team was eliminated from the WCHA tournament with a 5-2 loss at Ferris State Saturday night. The Wildcats lost the opening game of that best-of-three series 3-2 on Friday.
The series between Bemidji State and Bowling Green… and Lake Superior State and Minnesota State… are tied at one win per team, and will be decided tonight.

The Calumet Wolverines closed their regular season with a 5-2 loss to the Mosinee Papermakers Saturday night. On Friday, the Wolverines defeated the Eagle River Falcons 12-6. Eric Bausano had a hat trick in Friday’s game.
Cody Sivonen scored the game-winner with 30-seconds remaining, as the Portage Lake Pioneers edged the De Pere Deacons 6-5 Saturday night. Sivonen scored twice, and Ryan Sullivan had a hat trick and two assists. The result of the Pioneers’ game against the Mosinee Papermakers Friday night was not reported.

Darren Helm’s overtime goal lifted the Detroit Red Wings to a 3-2 victory over the New York Rangers Saturday afternoon. The goal was Helm’s second of the game. The Wings forced the extra period when Brad Richards scored with just 32 seconds remaining in regulation. Detroit will host Toronto tonight. Face-off is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
Detroit defenseman Niklas Kronwall left Saturday’s game in the third period with what appeared to be a knee injury. He will be evaluated today.
NBA
The Detroit Pistons defeated the Philadelphia 76ers 125-111 Saturday night. The Pistons trailed by five at halftime, but used a strong second half to put the game away. All five Detroit starters scored in double figures, led by Reggie Jackson with 24 points. The Pistons play at Philadelphia tomorrow night. Tip-off is at 8:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
MLB
In spring training baseball, the Detroit Tigers blanked the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-0 Saturday. Mike Pelfrey pitched five scoreless innings. J.D. Martinez homered. The Tigers face the Pirates again this afternoon.
The Milwaukee Brewers edged the Colorado Rockies 7-6 Saturday. Milwaukee starter Taylor Jungmann pitched three scoreless innings. Orlando Arcia homered. The Brewers will take on Cleveland this afternoon.

The Detroit Lions signed former New Orleans safety Rafael Bush to a one-year contract Saturday.
