In high school football last night…
– Hancock spotted the Gogebic Miners an 18-0 lead, then roared back to claim a 40-18 victory. Aaron Barnes rushed for 144 yards and three touchdowns, as the Bulldogs improved their record to 2-0.
MTU
The Michigan Tech women’s soccer team opened its season with a 1-0 victory at Winona State last night. Sarah Boyd scored the game’s only goal. Kirsten Hudak and Amanda Young combined to stop 14 Warriors shots.
The Tech volleyball team shut down Indianapolis 3-0 yesterday at the Hillsdale tournament. MacAulay Petersen had 13 kills. The Huskies will continue play at the Hillsdale tournament against Glenville State and Findlay today.
Finlandia
Glodie Kangia’s goal in overtime lifted the Finlandia University men’s soccer team to a 3-2 victory at Northland College last evening. Zach Wichman and Osvaldo Cruz also scored for the Lions. Thomas Whiting had nine saves.
The Finlandia women’s soccer team fell 2-0 to Northland. Haley Makela made 19 saves for the Lions, who were outshot 41-1.
The Finlandia volleyball team opened a tournament in Lake Forest, Illinois, yesterday with a 3-0 loss to Aurora University. The result of the Lions’ match against the University of Dubuque last evening was not reported. The Lions face the Milwaukee School of Engineering this afternoon.
The Finlandia University football team opens its season in Mequon today against Concordia-Wisconsin.
MLB
The Cleveland Indians ripped the Detroit Tigers 10-0 last night. Starter Buck Farmer gave up five runs, and was pulled in the fourth inning after throwing 80 pitches. Blaine Hardy was charged with three runs, and Jeff Farrell gave up two. In yesterday afternoon’s contest, Francisco Lindor’s RBI single off Shane Greene in the ninth inning gave the Indians a 3-2 victory.
The Tigers host the Indians again this evening. Jordan Zimmermann will face Corey Kluber. Pregame coverage will begin at 5:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
Neil Walker’s first-inning home run was all the Milwaukee Brewers needed to edge the Washington Nationals 1-0 last night. Jimmy Nelson gave up just three hits and struck out 11 over seven masterful innings. Josh Hader and Cory Knebel finished up, with Knebel earning his 32nd save.
The Brewers host the Nationals again tonight. Brandon Woodruff will pitch against Max Scherzer.
The Cubs also won, so Milwaukee remains three-and-a-half games back in the National League Central Division race.
NFL
NFL teams have until 4:00 this afternoon to finalize their 53-player rosters for the regular season. The Detroit Lions announced some cuts yesterday, including veteran running back Matt Asiata. The Lions also activated defensive end Ezekiel Ansah and offensive tackle Corey Robinson from the Physically Unable to Perform list.
