Bulldogs, Gremlins to Meet in Hockey Regional Final – Friday Sports Wrap

High School
Houghton and Hancock each advanced to the hockey regional tournament final by shutting out their semifinal opponents last night.
– The Gremlins blanked L’Anse 8-0 in a game that ended after two periods because of the mercy rule. Cole Jepson scored the eventual game-winner four minutes into the first period. Reid Pietila had two goals. Houghton outshot the Purple Hornets 34-3.
– Hancock whitewashed Jeffers 7-0. Bryan Lepisto had two goals and two assists. Jacob Norkol scored once and had two assists. The Bulldogs outshot the Jets 43-12.

Houghton and Hancock will face off for the regional title tomorrow afternoon at 1:00. Our pregame coverage will begin just after 12:30 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

In boys regular-season basketball last night…
– Houghton fell to Marquette 30-24.
– Calumet lost to Escanaba 70-57.
– Jeffers got past Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 48-41.
– Ontonagon edged Baraga 56-52.
– L’Anse fell to Westwood 62-37.
– Ewen-Trout Creek outscored Bessemer 68-52.

The regular season wraps up tonight, as Hancock plays at Bessemer in a game that was rescheduled from February 2nd.

In girls tournament basketball play tonight…
– In Class D at Ontonagon, Chassell and Ontonagon will play for the district title. Tip-off is at 7:00. Our pregame coverage will begin around 6:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
– In Class B at Houghton, Houghton and Escanaba meet for the district title. Tip-off is at 7:00 Our pregame coverage will begin around 6:40 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

MTU/NMU
The WCHA regular hockey season wraps up this weekend. Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan will play a home-and-home beginning tonight at 7:07 at the MacInnes Student Ice Arena, and ending tomorrow night in Marquette.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University softball team continued to struggle on its spring trip to Clermont, Florida. Yesterday, the Lions lost to Otterbein University 19-1, and was shut out by Catholic University of America 14-0. Finlandia will play Elizabethtown College this morning at 9:00, and Roger Williams University at 11:00. The Lions will wrap up their southern trip with games against the University of Mount Union and Cornell College tomorrow morning.

The Finlandia baseball team opened its southern trip at Fort Myers yesterday with two wins over North Central University. In the first game, Luke Paul struck out seven, as the Lions earned a 7-1 victory. In the second game, freshman Jordan Eaddy earned his first collegiate win, as the Lions edged the Rams 3-2.  The Lions will play two against the College of Old Westbury today at 9:00 and noon. Tomorrow, they’ll face Eastern Nazarene College and Rockford University.

The Calumet Wolverines visit the Fond du Lac Bears tonight, and the West Bend Bombers tomorrow night. The Portage Lake Pioneers play at West Bend tonight, and Fond du Lac tomorrow.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings will play at Chicago Sunday afternoon. Face-off is at 5:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons visit the New York Knicks tomorrow night. Tip-off is at 7:00 on A 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

In spring training baseball, the Detroit Tigers defeated the Atlanta Braves 8-2 yesterday. Starting pitcher Daniel Norris gave up a run on one hit over two innings, and earned the win. Lefthander Shane Greene pitched two scoreless inning in his first appearance since undergoing surgery for an aneurysm in his pitching arm. Victor Martinez hit his second home run of the spring, and Ian Kinsler drove in three runs. The Tigers will face the Yankees this afternoon at 1:05. Hear the broadcast on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

Tigers’ outfielder Cameron Maybin will miss four-to-six weeks with a broken wrist. Maybin was hit by a pitch in Wednesday’s game.

Half of the Milwaukee Brewers edged the San Francisco Giants 8-7 in Cactus League play yesterday. The other half got past the Cubs 2-1. The Brewers face the Mariners this afternoon.

The UP Health System Great Bear Chase will be held tomorrow on the Swedetown Trails. The schedule includes a 50k Skiathlon… and Freestyle and Classic events of 50k, 25k and 10k.
