Hancock Hockey LogoIn high school hockey Friday night…
– A Reid Hamar shot through a screen after six minutes of non-stop action in the third period pushed Hancock past Brighton 3-1. Brighton, ranked second in the state in Division One, took an early lead 84 seconds into the game as Brad Halonen put one in on the outside post. Hancock tied the contest on Alex Nordstrom’s short-hander three minutes into the second period and the score remained tied until Hamar’s game-winner in the third. Cory Tourtillott tossed one into the empty net to finish the scoring. Goalie Dawson Kero stopped 30 shots for Hancock, now 9-5 on the year, while Brighton’s Tyler Roy saved 23.
– Calumet defeated Novi 3-1.

– Houghton stopped Lake Linden-Hubbell 52-32. Sloane Zenner scored 16 for the Gremlins. See video highlights from the game here.

– Chassell edged Bessemer 35-34.
– Baraga shut down Watersmeet 53-25.
– L’Anse lost at Stephenson 48-29.

MTU
At the Desert Hockey Classic in Arizona, Michigan Tech advanced to the title game with a 4-2 victory over Connecticut Friday night. Brent Baltus, Dylan Steman, Alex Gillies and Shane Hanna all scored for Tech. Jamie Phillips stopped 19 of the 21 shots he faced in goal. Yale defeated Arizona State in the other semifinal, so the Huskies will face the Elis in the title contest tomorrow at noon. Video coverage of the Sunday game will streamed at no charge through the Pac 12 website here.

Both Michigan Tech basketball teams will play at Ashland University today.

NMU
The Northern hockey team upended 18th-ranked Minnesota State 3-1 Friday night. Atte Tolvanen made 41 saves for the Wildcats. Those teams play in Mankato again tonight.

Both Northern Michigan University basketball will play at Lake Erie today.

Finlandia
Both Finlandia basketball teams lost at Minnesota-Morris Friday night. The women dropped an 80-59 decision. Brooke Pasanen led the Lions with 17 points, and Julia Daavettila added 12 points and nine rebounds. The men fell 89-73. Marcus Geralds scored 27 for the Lions. Both Finlandia teams play at Crown College this afternoon.

The Finlandia women’s hockey team lost to St. Olaf 4-1 at the Bruiser Bowl in Adrian Friday. Sierra Meiners scored the Lions only goal. Finlandia will face Manhattanville College in Adrian today. The Finlandia men’s team hosts St. Scholastica tonight at 7:15, and tomorrow afternoon at 4:00 at the Houghton County Arena.

GLHL
The Calumet Wolverines defeated the Marquette Iron Rangers 7-4 Friday night. See video highlights here. Tonight, the Wolverines will play the Portage Lake Pioneers. Face-off is at 7:30 at Dee Stadium.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings skate at Anaheim tomorrow night. We’ll join the game after Packers football on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons host the Brooklyn Nets tonight.

NFL
The NFL playoffs open this weekend with the Wild Card games. Today, the Chiefs visit the Texans at 4:35, and Bengals host the Steelers at 8:15. On Sunday, the Vikings entertain the Seahawks at 1:05, and the Packers visit Washington at 4:40. Hear all four games on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

Detroit Lions LionThe Detroit Lions have found their new general manager. The team says that Patriots director of pro scouting Bob Quinn has reached an agreement in principle to take the job. Quinn is 39 years old. He’s been with New England since 2000, and has worked his way up from player personnel assistant. The futures of interim general manager Sheldon White and head coach Jim Caldwell remain unclear.

Nordic Skiing
The 2016 U.S. Cross Country Ski Championships Freestyle distance events wrap up with the Classic Sprints today at the Tech Trails.
