In high school boys basketball last night, Hancock lost to West Iron County 51-33.

On the boys schedule tonight, the Dollar Bay-Tamarack City v Watersmeet game has been postponed because of weather. No make-up date has been announced.

MTU/NMU
Both Michigan Tech basketball teams welcome Grand Valley State this evening. The women’s contest starts at 5:30, and the men’s game at 7:30 at the SDC. The women’s team is ranked 17th in this week’s Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Division II poll.

MTU men’s standout Kyle Monroe has been named the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Division II Men’s National Player of the Week. Monroe scored 72 points in the Huskies’ wins over Davenport University and Northern Michigan University.

Both Northern Michigan teams host Purdue Northwest this evening.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons entertain the Memphis Grizzlies tonight. New Pistons Blake Griffin, Willie Reed and Brice Johnson are expected to make their Detroit debuts tonight. Tip-off is at 7:00 on 99.3 The Lift.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings edged the San Jose Sharks 2-1 in a shootout last night. Trevor Daley scored the Wings’ goal in regulation, and Justin Abdelkader’s shot in the seventh round of the shootout was the game-winner. Petr Mrazek made 30 saves to earn the win. The Wings visit the Carolina Hurricanes tomorrow. Pregame coverage will begin at 6:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB
Former Detroit Tigers catcher Alex Avila has agreed to a free agent deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks. It’s a two-year contract worth a little more than four-million per season.

Retro Ski
The Keweenaw Nordic Ski Club will host its annual Retro Ski at the Maasto Hiihto trails. Meet at the Tomasi Trail Head at 12:30 for a back country trek. Afterward, the group will head to a restaurant for a meal and some social time. You’re encouraged to wear old style gear and bring your old-style skis, but it’s not required. There is no official registration, but they’d like to know how many are coming. Our high school hockey coverage continues tomorrow and Saturday, with four hockey games from the Trenton Showcase. We’ll open with Hancock’s game against Plymouth. On Wednesday, we’ll bring you the boys basketball game between unbeaten Dollar Bay-Tamarack City, and unbeaten Ewen-Trout Creek from the SDC.
