Budweg Throws No-Hitter as Twilight League Opens – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School

The Houghton High School baseball team travels to Gladstone today to face the Braves in a tournament regional semifinal. Coverage will begin at 4:45 on 97.7 The Wolf.  Charlevoix and Grayling will meet in the other regional semifinal.

The Jeffers baseball team will face Norway in a Division IV regional semifinal at Norway this afternoon. Rudyard and Harbor Springs will play in the other regional semifinal. 

Twilight League

On the opening night of the Copper Country Twilight Baseball League…
• REL-Mohawk Technology downed Craig Heinonen Coldwell Banker 9-3.
• Coy Budweg tossed a no-hitter, as Garnet Garage blanked Northern Driveline 4-0. Budweg struck out nine, and walked just two. He and Reed Heathman each drove in two runs.

MLB

Zack McInstry’s two-run homer was all the Tigers needed in a 3-1 victory over the Rangers last night. Riley Greene added a solo shot to help secure the win. Jack Flaherty gave up two hits over five scoreless innings, but left the game with back stiffness. Tyler Holton gave up Texas’ only run in the ninth inning.

The Tigers conclude that series at Texas tonight. Kenta Maeda will pitch against José Ureña. Coverage will begin at 7:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

After the game, Flaherty said the early departure was precautionary, and that he anticipates being ready for his next start.

Reliever Shelby Miller has been reinstated from the injured list, after missing three weeks with a nerve problem in his pitching arm. Reliever Mason Englert has been sent down to Toledo to make room.

Nick Castellanos’ double off Joel Payamps in the bottom of the 10th gave the Phillies a 2-1 win over the Brewers last evening.

The Brewers visit the Phillies again this afternoon. Aaron Ashby will come up from Nashville to start against Aaron Nola. Ashby has been continuing his rehab after surgery last summer.

Golf

There are several golf outings upcoming….
• The annual Tony Selkey Memorial Golf Scramble will be held June 15th at the L’Anse Golf Club. Money raised supports the Baraga County Community Foundation’s efforts to assist area youth. To register your team, email baragacf@up.net.
• The 21st annual Joe Evans Golf Classic will take place June 19th at the Portage Lake Golf Course. All proceeds from this event will go towards the end of life care mission at Omega House. Contact Mike Lutz at Omega House 482-4438 for more details and to register your team.
