Zimmermann

MLB
Jordan Zimmermann gave up five runs in the third inning, as the Detroit Tigers lost to the Cleveland Indians 11-2 Friday night. Zimmermann completed the third, but didn’t return for the fourth. The Detroit bullpen was equally ineffective. Chad Bell and Alex Wilson combined to allow four runs in the sixth, and Blaine Hardy surrendered two runs in the seventh.

V. Martinez

The Tigers continue that series at Cleveland tonight. Justin Verlander will start against Mike Clevinger. Pregame coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Detroit designated hitter Victor Martinez collected his 2,000th career hit in the game. Fans in Cleveland, where he began his career, gave him a standing ovation.

Tigers outfielder Justin Upton has been added to the American League All-Star team as a reserve. He takes the place of pitcher Michael Fulmer, who was the only Tiger on the starting team. Fulmer will take part in the festivities, but won’t pitch because he’s starting Sunday night.

Aguilar

The Milwaukee Brewers broke open a tie game with five runs in the seventh inning, and defeated the New York Yankees 9-4 Friday night. Jesús Aguilar slugged two home runs, including his first major-league grand slam. Milwaukee starter Junior Guerra gave up three runs. He left the game in the fourth inning, after a rain delay. Josh Hader got the win in relief.

The Brewers continue that set against the Yankees in New York this afternoon. Brent Suter will pitch against Luis Severino.

Durocher Tournament
The Copper Country Twilight League is hosting the 2017 Leo Durocher Memorial Hardball Tournament this weekend. Action at the Stanton field continues today, as Dean Kangas/State Farm plays Wolverine/Orbit at 10:00… REL/Mohawk Technologies meets the Negaunee Tri City North Stars at noon. Dean Kangas/State Farm plays the Channing Railroaders at 2:15. The Negaunee Tri City North Stars take on Superior National Bank/Stanton at 4:15. Wolverine/Orbit plays the Channing Railroaders at 6:30.

Fast Pitch Softball
In a Copper Country Softball League make-up game Friday night, Auto Pro Glass and Tire snapped a 5-5 tie with two runs in the top of the fifth inning, and went on to defeat Frank A. Douglass Agency 8-6. Kenzie Brunette’s home run was the big blow. At the plate for Auto Pro Glass and Tire, Kyleigh Audette had four singles, Brunette had two doubles and a home run and Taylor Shepeard had two singles. Harlee Froberg had a double and a single for Frank A. Douglass Agency and Cassidy Becia had a double. Sarah Audette was the winning pitcher, with seven strikeouts and one walk. Josie Conners took the loss for Frank A. Douglass Agency. Conners had six strikeouts.

Caldwell-Pope

NBA
Kentavious Caldwell-Pope in no longer a Detroit Piston. After concluding the trade that sent Marcus Morris to the Boston Celtics in exchange for Avery Bradley, signing free agent guard Langston Galloway, and drafting Duke guard Luke Kennard, the Pistons rescinded their qualifying offer to Caldwell-Pope, who is a restricted free agent. Salary cap issues prevented the Pistons from offering Caldwell-Pope the amount of money he’s likely to make as a free agent. He is free to sign with any team.

Frisbee
The 60th annual International Frisbee Tournament opens at Agassiz Field in Calumet this morning. The first round-robin matches should start around 10:00. Elimination matches and the final will be played tomorrow. Contenders include the defending champion Appleton Assassins, and the local Shottle Bop team that recently won the Wisconsin state championship. Spectators are welcome, and refreshments will be available. There is no charge to attend. For more details, click here.
