NHL

The National Hockey League draft opened with a surprise last night. The Canadiens used the first pick to take Slovakian winger Juraj Slafkovsky. Slafkovsky’s stock rose with a dominating performance at the recent Olympics and World Championships. The Devils followed by taking another Slovakian, defenseman Simon Nemec. The Coyotes used the third pick to take University of Minnesota standout Logan Cooley. The player whom most observers thought would go first in the draft, Canadian center Shane Wright, fell to fourth, and was grabbed by the Seattle Kraken.

With the eighth pick, the Red Wings selected Austrian center Marco Kasper. He played for Rögle BK in the Swedish Hockey League last season, and is expected to spend this coming season there, as well.

Rounds two through seven will be held today.

MLB

The Tigers won their fifth straight game last night, edging the White Sox 2-1. Beau Brieske pitched shutout ball into the seventh, giving up just two hits. Javier Báez hit a solo home run in the fourth inning. Spencer Torkelson singled home Eric Haase with an insurance run in the top of the ninth, which became the game-winner when the Sox scored one off Gregory Soto in the bottom of the ninth. With runners at second and third and one out, Soto bore down, struck out José Abreu, and got Eloy Jiménez to ground out to short.

The Tigers visit the Sox again tonight. Tarik Skubal will pitch against Lucas Giolito. Coverage will begin at 7:50 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Brewers had yesterday off, and host the Pirates tonight. Aaron Ashby will pitch against J.T. Brubaker.

Guts Frisbee

The 64th annual Coca Cola International Frisbee Tournament will be played this weekend at the Driving Park. Some of the best Guts Frisbee teams in the world will compete for the coveted Nachazel Cup. Preliminary rounds begin tomorrow morning at 9:30, and continue through the day. Play resumes Sunday at 9:00, with the championship match scheduled for late afternoon. Spectators are welcome.

The Boomtown Saints, who won their eighth IFT championship last year, will be back to defend their title. Hancock’s Shottle Bop team will be a strong contender. Other local teams competing include Gino’s American Pie, Monte Carlo, and Dolly’s L & L. A half dozen Marquette teams will give this year’s tourney a strong regional presence.

Tomorrow night, a new class will be inducted into the International Frisbee and USA Guts Hall of Fame. Locals Dennis Walikainen and Dan Thornton played on the legendary Paul’s Bar American Pie team in the 1970s. Teammates Gerard Newman and Duane Haralson have already been enshrined in the hall. Walikainen has continued to be a major influence in the sport as a tournament organizer, promoter and historian.

Al Bonopane, Tom Cleworth and Dave Meyer will also be inducted into the hall tomorrow.

The Hall of Fame is located on the upper level of the Calumet Colosseum, and is open for public viewing.
