In cross country, several local teams will compete at the Foxes and Hounds meet at Westwood this afternoon.
Finlandia
The Finlandia University women’s soccer team edged Northland College 1-0 yesterday. Kirsten L’Esperance scored the game’s only goal off a pass from Jessica Tosh in the 76th minute. Haley Makela got the shutout in net.
The Lions’ men’s team lost to Northland 2-1. The Lumberjacks scored the game-winner on a free kick with two minutes remaining. Dare Mayomi had Finlandia’s only goal.
MTU
Michigan Tech volleyball player Laura DeMarchi has been named the GLIAC North Division Player of the Week. In the Huskies’ two wins over Wayne State and Ashland, DeMarchi totaled 119 assists and 30 digs. The Tech volleyball team is rated 25th in the nation this week in the American Volleyball Coaches Association poll. It’s the first time since 2001 that the Huskies have been nationally ranked.
MLB
The Milwaukee Brewers are champions of the National League Central Division, after defeating the Chicago Cubs 3-1 yesterday. Lorenzo Cain’s RBI single in the top of the eighth inning broke a 1-1 tie. Ryan Braun followed with a single that drove home an insurance run. Jhoulys Chacín pitched into the sixth inning. The only hit he gave up was a solo home run in the fifth. Cory Knebel got the win in relief, and Josh Hader turned in a two-inning save. Yesterday’s extra game was scheduled after the two teams finished in a tie for the division lead at the end of the regular season.
The Brewers will entertain the Los Angeles Dodgers in a National League Divisional series beginning Thursday. L-A defeated the Colorado Rockies 5-2 yesterday in a game that decided the N-L West crown. The Cubs will host the Rockies in the National League Wild Card play-in game tonight. The New York Yankees will entertain the Oakland Athletics in the American League Wild Card play-in contest tomorrow night.
With a .326 average, Milwaukee’s Christian Yelich became the first Brewer ever to win a batting title. He fell two home runs and one RBI short of the Triple Crown.
NHL
Detroit Red Wings defenseman Mike Green will not open the season with the team. Green has been placed on short-term injured reserve because of a virus that’s been attacking his liver. He is recovering, but needs more time and conditioning. The Wings open the regular season Thursday at home against the Columbus Blue Jackets. Because of NFL football on 99.3 The Lift, pregame coverage will begin at 7:05 on KBear 102.3.
NFL
In last night’s NFL contest, the Kansas City Chiefs scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, and edged the Denver Broncos 27-23. Kareem Hunt rushed for 121 yards, and scored the winning touchdown with less than two minutes remaining. If you played The Wolf Pro Football Challenge, you must have selected at least 12 games correctly to be eligible to be this week’s winner.
