Little League
The Taylor North team from Michigan won the Little League World Series yesterday, defeating the Hamilton West Side club from Ohio 5-2 in the title game. You’ll remember that Taylor North was in the same play-in pool as the Portage Lake team at the state tournament last month. Even though Taylor North shut out Portage Lake 10-0, both teams advanced out of pool play. Portage Lake eventually lost in the semifinals to Roosevelt Park 11-1. Taylor North then eliminated Roosevelt Park 9-2 to win the state championship, and earn a berth in the World Series.
MLB
The Detroit Tigers fell 2-1 to the Toronto Blue Jays yesterday. Matthew Boyd gave up two solo home runs over four innings in his first start in more than two months. Harold Castro’s RBI single in the sixth produced Detroit’s only run. Tigers batters struck out 11 times.
The Tigers host the Minnesota Twins in a make-up game from July 16th this afternoon. Casey Mize will start against Bailey Ober. Coverage will begin at 1:50 on 99.3 The Lift.
Detroit has optioned pitcher Jason Foley back down to the Toledo Hud Hens.
The Milwaukee Brewers broke their three-game losing streak with a 6-2 victory over the Minnesota Twins yesterday. Luis Urías and Rowdy Tellez homered. Aaron Ashby earned his first major league win, allowing two runs on three hits over five innings.
The Brewers visit the San Francisco Giants tonight. Corbin Burnes will pitch against Johnny Cueto.
Former Milwaukee pitcher Chase Anderson has been released by the Philadelphia Phillies. Anderson signed a one-year, $4 million free agent contract at the start of the season, but struggled, making just 14 appearances, including nine starts, with an ERA of 6.75.
