Brewers Lose Late – Friday Sports Wrap

MLB

The Detroit Tigers had yesterday off, and begin a series against the Rangers in Texas tonight. Tyler Alexander will pitch against Lance Lynn. Pregame coverage starts at 7:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

New Tigers outfielder Travis Demeritte is expected to make his debut in tonight’s game. Demeritte was one of two players Detroit received from the Atlanta Braves in exchange for closer Shane Greene. He fills the roster spot created by Nicholas Castellanos’ trade to the Chicago Cubs. To take Greene’s place in the bullpen, the Tigers called Eduardo Jiménez back up from Toledo.

Castellanos made his Chicago debut last night, getting the Cubs’ only hit in a 8-0 loss to the Saint Louis Cardinals.

The Oakland Athletics scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, and came from behind to defeat the Milwaukee Brewers 5-3 yesterday. The big blow was Matt Chapman’s two-run homer off Josh Hader. Chase Anderson turned in a quality start, giving up a run on just two hits over six innings.

Trent Grisham made his major league debut for Milwaukee in yesterday’s game. He was called up from San Antonio following a memorable game on Tuesday, in which he hit for the cycle, with two home runs. He did not get a hit yesterday, but did drive in a run.

The Brewers open a critical weekend series against the Cubs in Chicago this afternoon. Zach Davies will start against José Quintana.

To make room for Grisham and newly-acquired pitcher Drew Pomeranz, the Brewers optioned reliever Taylor Williams and infielder Tyler Saladino to San Antonio. They also designated reliever Jacob Barnes for assignment to create a space they needed on the 40-man roster. Manager Craig Counsell said Pomeranz will be used out of the bullpen.
