Brewers Hold On for Win – Sunday Sports Wrap

The Finlandia University baseball team will play a single game at Wisconsin-Platteville this afternoon.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers’ game against the White Sox in Chicago was rained out yesterday. It will be made up as part of a day-night doubleheader on July 3rd. The Tigers wrap up that series this afternoon. Matthew Boyd will start against Reynaldo López. Pregame coverage will begin at 1:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Milwaukee Brewers built an early lead, then held off the New York Mets 8-6 last night. Christian Yelich blasted his 14th home run of the season, tying Albert Pujols and Alex Rodriguez for the most home runs before May 1st in a season in Major League history. Ben Gamel also homered. Brandon Woodruff gave up a run over five innings to earn the win. Alex Wilson and Alex Claudio combined to give up four runs in the seventh.

The Brewers will face the Mets in New York again this afternoon. Gio Gonzalez will pitch against Steven Matz.

Gonzalez is back with Milwaukee after opting out of the minor league contract he had signed at the beginning of the season with the New York Yankees. He spent the final two months of last season with Milwaukee.

NHL

In the NHL Stanley Cup playoffs last night…
– The Dallas Stars defeated the Saint Louis Blues 4-2. That series is tied 1-1.
– The Columbus Blue Jackets edged the Boston Bruins 3-2 in double overtime. That set is also tied 1-1.

Today…
– The Carolina Hurricanes visit the New York Islanders. Carolina leads that series 1-0.
– The Colorado Avalanche face the Sharks in San Jose. San Jose leads that series 1-0.

NBA

In NBA playoff action last night…
– The Toronto Raptors drew first blood in their second-round series by defeating the Philadelphia 76ers 108-95.
– The Denver Nuggets advanced to the second round with a 90-86 win over the San Antonio Spurs. Denver took that opening-round series 4-3.

Two other conference semifinal series begin today…
– The Milwaukee Bucks host the Boston Celtics.
– The Houston Rockets visit the Golden State Warriors.

NFL

On the final day of the NFL Draft, the Detroit Lions chose Clemson defensive end Austin Bryant with the 117th pick, Penn State cornerback Amani Oruwariye with pick 146, Old Dominion wide receiver Travis Fulgham with the 184th pick, Maryland running back Ty Johnson with the 186th pick, Georgia tight end Isaac Nauta with pick 224, and Arizona defensive tackle P.J. Johnson with the 229th selection.

The Green Bay Packers selected Texas A and M defensive end Kingsley Keke with the 150th pick, Toledo cornerback Ka’dar Hollman with pick 185, Notre Dame running back Dexter Williams with the 194th selection, and Texas Christian linebacker Ty Summers with pick 226.
