High School
The annual U.P. Football All Star Game will be played tomorrow at the Superior Dome. Kickoff is at 1:00. Local players involved include Danny Marcotte from Lake Linden-Hubbell and Easton Legault from Ontonagon on Team Red. Alan Bjorn, Cam Anderson, Travis Eck and Travis Hyrkas from Calumet, Gabe Popko and Sam Roberts from Lake Linden-Hubbell, Wyatt Jenkins from Houghton, and Redd Strong from Ontonagon will suit up for Team Black. Team Red will be coached by Menominee’s Chad Brandt. Team Black will be led by former Finlandia University head coach Travis Wiltzius, who is now on the staff at Gladstone High School. His assistants will include Tim Driscoll, also a former Finlandia head coach who is now the head coach at Houghton, Houghton assistant coach Eli Louma, and Calumet head coach Josh Frantti.
Twilight League
In Twilight League baseball last night…
• Craig Heinonen Coldwell Banker edged Houghton Building Supply 5-4. Carson Turner got the complete game win, with 12 strikeouts.
• Northern Driveline blanked REL-Mohawk Technology 3-0.
MLB
The Tigers had yesterday off, and host the White Sox tonight. Jack Flaherty will start against Erick Fedde. Coverage will begin at 6:15 on 99.3 The Lift.
Jake Cronenworth’s walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth lifted the Padres to a 7-6 victory over the Brewers last night. The two-out blow off Joel Payamps came after Milwaukee had scored twice in the top of the inning to tie the score. Bryse Wilson got off to a tough start, giving up four runs in the first inning. Willy Adames homered for the Crew.
The Brewers play at San Diego again tonight. Colin Rea will pitch against Dylan Cease.
Milwaukee pitcher Robert Gasser will not return this season. He’ll undergo Tommy John ligament replacement surgery on his pitching elbow. Typical recovery time for that procedure is a year.
NHL
The Stanley Cup series continues tonight, as the Oilers host the Panthers. Florida leads the series 3-2.
Roller Derby
Keweenaw Roller Derby will host Grand Raggidy from Grand Rapids tomorrow at the Colosseum. Doors open at 5, and skating begins at 6. Tickets are just $5 (cash or card) and children under 10 get in free.
Running
This year’s Canal Run will feature a new type of competition between runners from area schools.
In the Copper Country School Challenge, up to 10 athletes from each district will be eligible for scoring at each Canal Run distance level. Points will be awarded based on where each athlete finishes in relation to other school athletes competing in the same event.
The school with the best score wins the title
To enter the School Team Challenge, simply pick your school district from the list of teams during registration. If you have already signed up, you can update your RunSignUp registration.
