Brewers Drop Third Straight – Friday Sports Wrap

Click on the highlighted scores for additional game details.

High School

The high school cross country season begins today, with the Queen City Invitational in Marquette. Houghton and Hancock are among the schools scheduled to compete.

The Houghton High School volleyball team will see its first action of the season tomorrow at the Soo Invitational at Sault Ste. Marie.

MLB

The Tigers and Guardians were rained out in Cleveland last night. That game will be made up as part of a straight doubleheader today. Tarik Skubal will face Gavin Williams in game one. Matt Manning will start against Xzavion Curry in game two. Coverage will begin at 4:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Brewers lost their third straight game last night, falling to the Dodgers 1-0. The only run of the game came in the bottom of the eighth inning, when Austin Barnes hit his first home run of the season off Joel Payamps. That spoiled a great start by Corbin Burnes, who gave up just two hits over seven innings. In their three-game sweep at Los Angeles, Milwaukee collected a total of just 10 hits.

The Brewers open a series at Texas tonight. Brandon Woodruff will start against Andrew Heaney.

The Cubs and Reds were idle yesterday, so Milwaukee’s lead in the National League Central Division shrinks to two games.

Twilight League

In the opening round of the Copper Country Twilight Baseball League playoffs last night…
• Craig Heinonen Coldwell Banker dispatched REL-Mohawk Technology 5-3.

The Twilight League playoffs will conclude Sunday at the Houghton field. Craig Heinonen Coldwell Banker will face top-seed Garnet Garage in the first semifinal at 11. Northern Driveline will play second-seed Houghton Building Supply-Stanton in the second semifinal at 1. The winners will meet at 3 in the championship game, which we will broadcast on KBear 102.3.

NFL

The Lions host the Jaguars in their second preseason game tomorrow. Kickoff is at 1:00.

Detroit receiver Jameson Williams will likely miss the rest of the preseason, because of the hamstring injury he suffered in practice Wednesday. Williams will also miss the first six games of the regular season, because of his suspension for violating the NFL’s gambling rules.

The injury that receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown suffered Wednesday doesn’t seem to be as serious, but there’s no word as to when he’ll return to the field.

The Packers welcome the Patriots for an exhibition game tomorrow night at 7:00.

High school football kicks off next week. Each morning this week, our Everest Leach will talk with a head coach from a local team. This morning’s guest is L’Anse coach Eric DeMink. Hear the conversation at 9:30 on KBear 102.3 or 97.7 The Wolf, or online.

97.7 The Wolf will again serve as the Voice of Houghton Gremlins athletics this year. KBear 102.3 will again be the Voice of the Calumet Copper Kings. Affordable business sponsorship packages are available for broadcasts of either school, or both. Call 482-7700 to join our broadcast team.
