Brady Claims Photo Finish Deer Chase Win – Sunday Sports Wrap

In high school volleyball Saturday, the results of Baraga’s games at the West Iron County Invitational were not reported.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers fell to the Toronto Blue Jays 3-0 Saturday. Wily Peralta turned in a quality start, allowing two runs on six hits over six innings, but took the loss.

The Tigers play in Toronto again this afternoon. Drew Hutchison will start against Steven Matz. Coverage will begin at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Before yesterday’s game, the Tigers activated outfielder Derek Hill off the injured list, and designated first baseman Renato Núñez for assignment.

The Milwaukee Brewers scored five runs in the eighth inning, and outslugged the Washington Nationals 9-6 Saturday. Each team rapped out 11 hits. Christian Yelich broke out of his power slump with two home runs, including a massive grand slam in the eighth. He added a single, and drove in six runs.

The Brewers host the Nationals again this afternoon. Adrian Houser will pitch against Sean Nolin.

Milwaukee has added outfielder Tyrone Taylor to the injured list with an oblique strain. Pitcher Eric Yardley has been brought up.

NFL

The Green Bay Packers lost their pre-season contest to the New York Jets Saturday, 23-14. On a day when Green Bay held out almost all of their starters, quarterback Kurt Benkert completed 18 of 25 passes for one touchdown and one interception. The Packers conclude their exhibition schedule next Saturday at Buffalo.

The Detroit Lions’ late comeback fell short, as they dropped a 26-20 decision to the Pittsburgh Steelers. All of Detroit’s scoring came in the fourth quarter. David Blough completed 12 of 17 passes for 143 yards and one touchdown. The Lions wrap up their pre-season campaign Friday night at home against the Indianapolis Colts. Biking

Houghton’s Mattison Brady edged Samuel Kilpela of Atlantic Mine by a razor-thin one-tenth of a second to win the 27-mile race at the annual Great Deer Chase Saturday at the Swedetown Trails. Justin Hoffmeyer of Hancock placed third, more than three-and-a-half minutes off the pace. Kate McCloud of Atlantic Mine was the fastest woman.

Neil Swanson of Negaunee claimed the 15-mile title, finishing 13 seconds faster than Jeremy Hinkson of Marquette. Atlantic Mine’s Amanda Kilpela took the woman’s title.

Gage Gullstrand of Houghton won the youth 4-mile event. Elen Mehegan of Upper Saddle River, New Jersey won the youth 2.5-mile race.
