Boys Hoops Wins for Jets, Gremlins, Panthers and Hornets – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School

In boys high school basketball last evening…
– Jeffers overpowered Hancock 76-35.
– Houghton got past Lake Linden-Hubbell 68-60.
– Chassell stopped Baraga 72-63.
– L’Anse downed Ontonagon 58-44. Paul Jacobson led the Purple Hornets with 16, and
Dysean Allen added 15. Logan Latvis had 15 for the Gladiators.
– Ewen-Trout Creek defeated Watersmeet 61-40.

In girls high school basketball last night, L’Anse shut down Bessemer 69-20. Addison Mattson scored 25 for the Purple Hornets, and Maija Rice had 18.

Western Collegiate Hockey Association

Former Michigan Tech hockey goaltender Angus Redmond has been traded from the Anaheim Ducks to the Edmonton Oilers. Redmond has been playing with the Newfoundland Growlers in the East Coast Hockey League, and will remain with that club.

Finlandia University

Finlandia University’s Jacob Oom has been named the American Collegiate Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week. Oom recorded the second triple-double in school history with 17 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists in the Lions’ loss to Great Lakes Christian.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings lost 4-1 to the New Jersey Devils last night. Valtteri Filppula’s third-period goal was Detroit’s only score. Jonathan Bernier made 27 saves.

The Wings welcome the Minnesota Wild tomorrow evening. Coverage begins at 7:10 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons’ losing streak reached seven games last night, as they fell 115-98 to the Denver Nuggets. Christian Wood led Detroit with 20 points.

The Pistons visit the Phoenix Suns Friday night. Coverage begins at 8:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

In spring training baseball, the Detroit Tigers outslugged the New York Mets 9-6 yesterday. Miguel Cabrera, C.J. Cron and prospect Riley Greene homered. Starter Spencer Turnbull tossed two scoreless innings, and struck out four.

The Tigers face the Toronto Blue Jays this afternoon.

The Milwaukee Brewers lost 2-1 to the Seattle Mariners yesterday. Freddy Peralta threw two scoreless innings for the Crew.

The Brewers play the San Francisco Giants today.

Ice Fishing

The Chassell VFW Post will hold its annual ice fishing tournament Saturday on Portage Lake. Fishing for northern pike, walleye, crappie and perch in the adult tournament will begin at 7:00 am. All catches must be registered by 7:00 pm. The entry fee is $15.00. Fishing in the kids tournament will run from 7:00 am to 1:00 pm. There is no charge for kids to participate. Sign up at the Chassell VFW during regular business hours, or Saturday morning between 7:00 and 10:00.

Our Finlandia University coverage continues Saturday, as the Lions women’s basketball team faces Pine Manor in the semifinals of the ACAA tournament in Milwaukee. The pregame show will begin around 6:40 on 99.3 The Lift and 993TheLift.com.

Our high school hockey tournament coverage begins with the regional semifinals tomorrow from the SDC. Houghton meets Hancock at 6:00, and Calumet takes on Jeffers at 8:00. The pregame show will begin around 5:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
