Boyd Shines in Tigers Win – Sunday Sports Wrap

Matt Boyd pitched seven shutout innings, as the Detroit Tigers blanked the Texas Rangers 2-0 Saturday. Boyd gave up just two hits in his longest-ever major league start. Shane Greene pitched a scoreless eighth inning, and Francisco Rodriguez earned his 33rd save of the season. Detroit’s runs came on a Victor Martinez single in the fifth inning, and a Casey McGehee double in the sixth.

The Tigers wrap up that series at Texas this afternoon. Michael Fulmer will start against A.J. Griffin. Hear the first pitch at 3:05 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

Cleveland won again yesterday, so the Indians still lead the Tigers by five games in the American League Central Division.

As expected, the Tigers brought Dixon Machado up from Toledo yesterday to fill in for injured shortstop Jose Iglesias.

The Cincinnati Reds scored eight runs in the sixth inning, and routed the Milwaukee Brewers 11-5 Saturday night. Zach Davies had given up just one run through five innings, but couldn’t retire a single batter in the sixth, as the Reds teed off on him and reliever Michael Blazek. Ryan Braun and Martin Maldonado homered, as Milwaukee scored all five of their runs over the final four innings.

The Brewers host the Reds again this afternoon. Wily Peralta will pitch against Cody Reed.

Former Northern Michigan University offensive lineman Kyle Steuck has been signed to a contract by the Green Bay Packers. Steuck grew up in Green Bay, and called the opportunity “a dream come true.” He has been added to the Packers’ 90-man roster. Fellow 2016 graduate Marcus Tucker is currently a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
