Both Tech Hoops Teams End Season in GLIAC Quarterfinals – Thursday Sports Wrap

High School

In girls basketball tournament district semifinals last night…
• In Division Three, West Iron County ended Calumet’s season 52-42. The Wykons built an early lead, and led by eight at halftime. The Copper Kings narrowed the gap to two midway through the second half, but couldn’t complete the comeback. Caitlyn Strom scored 21 for Calumet in her final game. Danica Shamian led the Wykons attack with 17 points. West Iron will host Westwood for the district title tomorrow night. The Patriots ousted Gwinn 57-19.
• In Division Four, District 97, Ironwood dispatched Bessemer 68-37. Ewen-Trout Creek eliminated Ontonagon 45-23. The Red Devils and Panthers will play for the district crown tomorrow at Ironwood.
• In Division Four, District 98, Lake Linden-Hubbell downed Jeffers 44-27. Hancock smothered Chassell 41-11. The Lakes will host the Bulldogs in the title match tomorrow at 6:00.
• In Division Four, District 99, Ishpeming ended L’Anse’s season 75-44. Baraga got past Forest Park 44-36. The Vikings will host the Hematites tomorrow at 6:00 in the championship game.

In the boys tournament, Lake Linden-Hubbell will face Forest Park in a Division Four regional final tonight at Negaunee. Tip-off will be at 7:00. The game will be broadcast by our Iron River station, WIKB 99.1 FM. Hear streamed coverage here.

College Basketball

Both Michigan Tech basketball teams ended their seasons with losses in the opening round of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament last night.
• The women dropped a 51-49 heartbreaker to Parkside. Isabella Lenz led the Huskies with 13 points. Katelyn Meister became the 30th player in team history to score 1,000 points in her career.
• The men also lost a close game, 79-76 at Grand Valley State. Marcus Tomashek scored 32 points for Tech, and Dan Gherezgher added 22.

Both Northern Michigan teams advanced to the semifinals with victories last evening.
• The women got past Wayne State 51-48. MacKenzie Holzwart scored 14.
• The men downed Purdue Northwest 71-63. Dylan Kuehl netted 27.

The women’s tournament now moves to Allendale, where top-seed Grand Valley will face fifth-seed Parkside in the first semifinal Saturday. Third-seed Northern will take on second-seed Ferris State. The championship game will be played Sunday.

Northern will host the rest of the men’s tournament. The top-seeded Wildcats will play fourth-seed Grand Valley at 1:00 Saturday. Third-seed Ferris State will face seventh-seed Wayne State at 3:00. The Warriors stunned second-seed Lake Superior State 87-78 last evening. The championship game will be staged on Sunday.

NHL

The Red Wings suffered an ugly 7-2 loss to the Avalanche last night. Robby Fabbri and David Perron scored early for Detroit, before Colorado reeled off six straight goals to take control. Alex Lyon gave up the first five goals. James Reimer relieved him in the third period.

The Wings visit the Coyotes tomorrow. Coverage will begin at 9:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Pistons host the Nets tonight. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Detroit has added some front court help by signing 14-year veteran Taj Gibson to a 10-day contract. He had played on and off this season with the Knicks.

MLB

The Tigers had yesterday off. They’ll split their squads for games against the Blue Jays and the Yankees this afternoon. Kenta Maeda will start the Toronto game, and Jack Flaherty will open against New York.

Half of the Brewers blanked the Reds 2-0 yesterday. Starter Bryse Wilson allowed just one hit over three innings. The other half of the Brewers played to a 3-3 tie with the Guardians. Eric Haase homered. Starter Chris Rea allowed two runs over three innings.

The Brewers will take on the White Sox this afternoon. Aaron Ashby will start.
