In hockey last night…
• Calumet downed Houghton 3-1. Jackson Rilei and Dean Loukus each had a goal and two assists for the Copper Kings. Noah Jukuri also found the net, and Aksel Loukus made 21 saves. Tedd Halonen scored the Gremlins’ only goal. Jimmy Pietila stopped 19 shots.
• Jeffers couldn’t overcome a slow start, and lost at Escanaba 3-1.

College Basketball
Both Michigan Tech basketball teams have advanced to the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship games…
• The top-seeded women held off Saginaw Valley State University 78-74 in yesterday’s semifinal. The Huskies led by 13 at halftime, but needed a late basket and two free throws by Baillie McGirk to seal the win. Ellie Mackay scored a season-best 25 points. The Huskies have won 17 straight, and will face Ashland in the championship game tomorrow at 1:00.
• The third-seeded men’s team dispatched Grand Valley State University 65-59 in their semifinal match last evening. Trent Bell and Owen White each scored 17 for the Huskies. White passed the 1,000 point career scoring mark. Tech has won five straight, and will meet Ashland in the championship game tomorrow at 2:30.
College Hockey
The 19th-ranked Michigan Tech hockey team lost 2-1 at fourth-ranked Minnesota State last night. Both Mavericks’ goals came in the first period. Trenton Bliss put the Huskies on the board in the third period, but Tech could get no closer. Blake Pietila stopped 33 shots for the Huskies.
Those teams conclude their regular seasons tonight in Mankato.

College Volleyball
The Michigan Tech volleyball team’s matches against Purdue Northwest this weekend have been canceled.
The Northern Michigan University volleyball team defeated Wisconsin-Parkside 3-1 yesterday. Those teams play again today in Marquette.
College Soccer
The Finlandia University soccer team has added a new recruit. Sullivan Whalen is from Auburn, Michigan, and played at Saginaw Valley Lutheran High School.
College Football
The Finlandia football team has also added a new player. Isaac Codere from Lake Linden was an All-U.P. eight-player Dream Team selection last season.
NHL
The Detroit Red Wings are off until Tuesday, when they host the Tampa Bay Lightning. Coverage begins at 7:15 on 99.3 The Lift.
NBA
Because of the all-star break, the Detroit Pistons won’t play again until they visit the Charlotte Hornets Thursday.
When the Pistons resume, they will be without Blake Griffin. He and the team agreed to a contract buyout yesterday. Both Griffin and club owner Tom Gores were complimentary, with Gores calling Griffin a “a great representative for our franchise and for the city of Detroit.” Griffin wished the team well, and thanked them for working out a solution that will allow him to move on, as they develop their young players. Griffin has officially been placed on waivers. If no other club claims him, he’ll become a free agent.
MLB
The Detroit Tigers and New York Yankees played to a nine-inning, 1-1 Grapefruit League tie yesterday. Starter Matthew Boyd threw two hitless, scoreless innings.
The Tigers face the Baltimore Orioles this afternoon. Michael Fulmer will make his first spring start.
In Cactus League action, the Milwaukee Brewers walloped the Colorado Rockies 12-3 yesterday. Corbin Burnes tossed two scoreless innings. Former Tiger Jordan Zimmermann gave up a three-run homer. The Brewers blasted four round-trippers.
The Brewers play the Chicago Cubs this afternoon.
