Bolts Strike Panthers, Win Battle of Unbeatens – Thursday Sports Wrap

In high school boys basketball last night, unbeaten Dollar Bay-Tamarack City held Ewen-Trout Creek to just 13 points in the first half, and handed the Panthers their first loss of the year, 51-42. 3,276 fans at the SDC saw the Blue Bolts build a 17-point halftime lead, thanks to 13 first half points by Jacob Iacono. A fourth-quarter rally by Ewen-Trout Creek couldn’t close the gap. Iacono led Dollar Bay with 16 points on the night. Devin Schmitz added 13. Future Michigan Tech Husky Jake Witt scored 20 points and grabbed 15 rebounds for the Panthers.

The Houghton JV hockey team will be holding a couple of fundraisers over the next several days. They’ll have a truck parked outside Tadych’s Econo Foods in Houghton from today through Sunday for donations of returnable cans and bottles. Players will also be collecting tips and receipts while bagging groceries at Econo Foods Saturday between 11:00 and 5:00.

Finlandia
Both Finlandia University basketball teams lost at St. Scholastica last night. The women struggled offensively, and dropped a 61-35 decision. Molly Berg led the Lions with 12 points, and Taylor Pertile added 10. The men fell 84-71. Brandon Robinette had 16 points for the Lions. Myles Ellington and Tristan Johnston each added 14.

Finlandia University received 15 football commitments yesterday. 11 of those players are from the Upper Peninsula. You can meet the new players here.

The Lions released their 2018 football schedule yesterday. After three non-conference games to open the season, Finlandia will play seven contests against Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association teams. Six games will be on the road. The Lions will open at home against Concordia-Wisconsin, and also host Kalamazoo College, Trine University, and Alma College.

Finlandia also introduced four men’s soccer players yesterday. Two are from Michigan. The others are from New Mexico and Minnesota.

20 high school seniors signed letters of intent to play football at Michigan Tech next fall. Six are from the Upper Peninsula, including offensive lineman Liam Gayan from Kingsford, linebacker Jacob Huhtala from Sault Ste. Marie, receiver Micah Wilson from Norway, defensive back Scout Wunder from Escanaba, and safety Jacob Rivard and linebacker Jason Janquart from Menominee. Meet Tech’s full recruiting class here.

Calumet High School standout Cooper Twardzik will play at Northern Michigan University next fall. He’s one of two U.P. players, and 25 overall, who were introduced by the Wildcats yesterday. You can meet the new class here.

Both Northern Michigan University teams play at Northwood this evening.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons won their fifth straight game last night, 115-106 over the Brooklyn Nets. Blake Griffin scored 11 of his 25 points in the fourth quarter to fuel a strong Detroit finish. Andre Drummond snared 27 rebounds – the most by anyone in the NBA this season. The Pistons host the Los Angeles Clippers tomorrow evening.

The Detroit Red Wings visit the Islanders in New York tomorrow. Pregame coverage begins at 6:40 on 99.3 The Lift.
