Bolts face Eagles in Boys Hoops Semi Today – Thursday Sports Wrap

High School
The undefeated Dollar Bay-Tamarack City boys basketball team faces top-ranked Southfield Christian in the state tournament Class D semifinals this afternoon at 5:30 at the Breslin Center. It’s the first-ever semifinal appearance for the Blue Bolts. The school will host a watch party at the auditorium, and fans are invited to view the game. Buckley and the Hillsdale Academy will meet in the other semifinal.

MTU
Michigan Tech has also scheduled a watch party, for tomorrow’s NCAA hockey tournament game against Notre Dame. Doors at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena will open at 2:45, ahead of the 3:00 faceoff. The first 500 fans will receive a free hot dog and soda.

The 2018 MTU football schedule has been released. The Huskies will open with two non-conference games – on the road at Truman State on Thursday, August 30th, and at home against former GLIAC opponent Hillsdale the following weekend. Homecoming will be September 29th against Saginaw Valley State, and the Miner’s Cup game against Northern Michigan University will be played October 27th in Marquette. Finlandia
The Finlandia University softball team split its games on the first day of the Cobber Classic at the West St. Paul Dome yesterday. In the first contest, the Lions trailed Bemidji State 9-3 after five innings, but came back to tie the game. The Beavers plated a run in the bottom of the seventh to earn a 10-9 victory. Denia Bent had two hits, scored twice, and drove in three runs. In the second game, Kassandra Avila threw a five-hitter, as the Lions defeated Bethany Lutheran 5-1. Finlandia wraps up play at the Cobber Classic today, with a game against Concordia Moorhead this morning, and a rematch against Bethany Lutheran this afternoon.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings will host the Washington Capitals tonight. Pregame coverage begins at 7:10 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons will visit Houston to face the Rockets tonight.

MLB
In spring training baseball, the Detroit Tigers lost a 3-2 decision to the Atlanta Braves last night. Starter Francisco Liriano walked five batters, but gave up just two runs over five innings. Mikie Mahtook homered. The Tigers face the Philadelphia Phillies this afternoon.

The Tigers now say it’s unlikely that starter Mike Fiers will be ready to begin the season. He’s been sidelined with a stiff back. The injury is still not believed to be serious.

Half of the Milwaukee Brewers edged the Oakland Athletics 4-3 yesterday afternoon. Eric Thames homered. Wade Miley allowed two runs over four innings, but left the game with a groin strain. Reliever Boone Logan also had to leave the game, with a sore shoulder. Both will be evaluated today. The other half of the Crew lost 7-4 to the Seattle Mariners last night. Mike Leake gave up four runs on 10 hits over six innings. Mike Zunino homered. The Brewers will face the Kansas City Royals today.

NFL
The Detroit Lions have added a couple more free agents. Tight end Luke Willson played the past five seasons with the Seattle Seahawks. Defensive tackle Sylvester Williams spent last season with the Tennessee Titans, after four years with the Denver Broncos. There are also reports that Detroit has agreed to terms with veteran defensive tackle Ricky Jean-Francois.
