Blue Bolt Boys Remain Unbeaten – Saturday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school hockey, at the Wisigan Cup event at the SDC last evening…
Negaunee defeated Merrill 9-2.
Hancock outskated Jeffers 6-1. Mason Mikesch scored twice for the Bulldogs, and Austin Salani, Colton Salani, Kyle Mikkola and Leroy Bastian each found the net once. Jackson Rocchi scored the Jets’ only goal.

The Jets will play Merrill today at 1:00.

In girls high school basketball last night…
Houghton defeated Chassell 56-26. Stella Wickstrom netted 19 for the Gremlins.
– Copper Country Christian defeated Washington Island 33-25. Esther Bishop led the Warriors with 14 points, and Sierra Jackson scored 12.

In boys play last night…
Dollar Bay-Tamarack City earned a 66-48 Homecoming victory over Lake Linden-Hubbell. The Blue Bolts remain unbeaten. Connor LeClaire scored 25. William Lyons scored 17 for the Lakes.
– Hancock lost at Ontonagon 65-46.
– Chassell edged Bessemer 75-73 in triple overtime. Karl Rautiola hit the game-winner in the closing seconds. He finished with 36 points.
– Baraga downed Republic-Michigamme 46-39.
– L’Anse fell to Wakefield-Marenisco 66-46. Tery Reed led the Purple Hornets with nine points.
– Ewen-Trout Creek got past Stephenson 67-56.

– Washington Island’s Ryan Jorgenson hit a three pointer with four seconds remaining, and the Bucks edged Copper Country Christian 36-35. Noah Bach scored 12 for the Warriors, and Caleb Bach added 10.

Both Copper Country Christian teams face Delta County today.

The Houghton High School swim team entertains Sault Ste. Marie today.

Western Collegiate Hockey Association

The Michigan Tech hockey team scored four times in the third period, and defeated Alabama-Huntsville 4-1 last night. After spotting the Chargers a 1-0 lead, Raymond Brice tied the contest early in the third frame. Parker Saretsky scored the game-winner less than 90 seconds later, and Brian Halonen and Logan Pietila added insurance markers.

The Huskies skate at Huntsville again tonight.

The 15th-ranked Northern Michigan University hockey team skated past Ferris State 5-2 last evening. Those teams play again tonight in Marquette.

Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference

Both Michigan Tech basketball teams play at Saginaw Valley State this afternoon.

Both Northern teams visit Northwood today.

Finlandia University

The Finlandia University women’s hockey team lost 6-1 at Wisconsin-Superior last night. Brenna Ceglar scored the Lions’ only goal, as FinnU was outshot 60-8. Those teams skate again this afternoon in Superior.

The Finlandia men’s hockey team, and both basketball teams, have the weekend off. 

GLHL

The Portage Lake Pioneers defeated the Eagle River Falcons 8-2 last night. The Pioneers will host the Fond Du Lac Bears this evening at 7:30 at Dee Stadium.

The Calumet Wolverines edged the Bears 7-6 last evening. They’ll entertain the Falcons tonight at 7:30 at the Colosseum.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings lost 4-2 to the New York Rangers last night. Robby Fabri and Valtteri Filppula scored late goals for the Wings. Jimmy Howard stopped 35 shots.

The Wings host the New York Rangers tonight. Coverage begins at 6:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons fell to the Toronto Raptors 105-92 last night. Derrick Rose scored 21 points, and Andre Drummond collected 20 rebounds.

The Pistons host the Denver Nuggets tomorrow afternoon.

MLB

Former Detroit Tigers outfielder Curtis Granderson has announced his retirement. Granderson played four full seasons and parts of two others with Detroit, then continued his career with the Yankees, Mets and four other teams.
