High School
In high school football action Saturday involving U.P. teams…
- In a Division Seven quarterfinal, North Muskegon shut down Menominee 23-0.
- In a Division Eight quarterfinal, Iron Mountain fell to Beal City 14-7.
- In an Eight-Player Division One semifinal, Pickford defeated Inland Lakes 34-18. The Panthers will face Deckerville for the championship Saturday at 11:00 at the Superior Dome.
- In an Eight-Player Division Two semifinal, Forest Park dispatched Onekama 49-24. The Trojans will meet Morrice for the crown Saturday at 2:00 at the Superior Dome.
College Football
The Michigan Tech football team overcame an 18-point fourth-quarter deficit, and wrapped up its season with a 32-28 victory at Saginaw Valley State Saturday. An Alex Fries one-yard touchdown plunge gave the Huskies an early lead, but they managed just an Avery Kucharski field goal as the Cardinals responded with four touchdowns in the first half. After a scoreless third quarter, Tech’s offense found some traction, with a three-yard Fries run, and three-yard Jake Rueff run, and another Kucharski field goal. With three minutes remaining, Fried found the end zone for the third time, capping a short drive set up when the Huskies recovered a pooch kick by Kucharski. Tech closes its season with a record of 7-4 overall, 4-3 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play.
The Northern Michigan squad concluded a winless campaign with a 30-14 loss at Wayne State. The Wildcats were held to just 10 yards passing.
College Volleyball
The MTU volleyball team ended its regular season with a 3-0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-13) sweep at Lake Superior State Saturday. Paige Wagner led a balanced Huskies attack with 10 kills. Tess Hayes logged 33 assists, and Amelia Albers had 14 digs. The Huskies are seeded fifth in the GLIAC tournament, and will open play Wednesday at fourth-seeded Wayne State.
The NMU volleyball squad stopped Saginaw Valley State 3-0 (25-19, 25-15, 25-17) Saturday. The Wildcats are seeded third in the GLIAAC tourney, and will open at home Wednesday against sixth-seeded Parkside.
College Hockey
The Tech hockey team had this weekend off.
NMU skated to a 1-1 tie with 16th-ranked Minnesota State last evening, then claimed the extra Central Collegiate Hockey Association standings point with a win in the shootout.
College Basketball
The MTU women’s basketball team dropped a 90-68 decision to Minnesota Crookston Saturday. Kendall Standfest scored 17 points to lead the Huskies.
The Tech men’s team lost 90-78 at Winona State Saturday. Ty Fernholz scored 23 for MTU, and Marcus Tomashek added 22. The Huskies play at Concordia-St. Paul today.
Jacy Wiesbrod scored 27 points, as the NMU women’s team dispatched Bemidji State 80-51 Saturday.
Julien Smith’s three-pointer at the buzzer gave the Northern men’s squad an 85-83 win over Illinois-Springfield Saturday. Sam Privet led the Wildcats with 22 points.
College Soccer
Top seed Northern Michigan University will face third seed Saginaw Valley State in the championship game of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women’s soccer tournament this afternoon at 1:00 in Marquette.
NHL
The Red Wings dropped a 4-1 decision to the Kings Saturday night. Dylan Larkin scored Detroit’s only goal late in the game. Cam Talbot made 37 saves, but took the loss in net.
The Wings visit the Sharks Monday. Because of NFL football on 99.3 The Lift, coverage will start at 10:15 on KBear 102.3.

The Pistons visit the Wizards today.
NFL
The Lions entertain the Jaguars in a 1:00 game today. Coverage will begin at noon on 99.3 The Lift. Jacksonville quarterback Trevor Lawrence will miss the game because of a shoulder injury. Mac Jones will fill in. Detroit tight end Sam LaPorta will miss the game, also because of a shoulder injury.
The Packers visit the Bears for a 1:00 contest.
The Chargers host the Bengals in the Sunday night game. In Monday’s contest, the Texans will visit the Cowboys. Both games will be broadcast on 99.3 The Lift.
