Bertuzzi Makes History in Wings Win – Wednesday Sports Wrap

MLB

Dustin Peterson’s double in the top of the ninth inning lifted the Detroit Tigers to a 3-1 victory over the New York Yankees last night. Peterson’s first major league hit dove home Niko Goodrum. Jordy Mercer then singled Peterson home with an insurance run. Jordan Zimmermann pitched into the seventh, and gave up New York’s only run. Joe Jiménez got the win in relief, and Shane Greene earned his third save.

Orlando Arcia’s three-run homer in the sixth inning powered the Milwaukee Brewers to a 4-3 victory over the Cincinnati Reds last night. Jhoulys Chacín gave up a run in the fourth inning, then left as the Reds scored another in the sixth. Josh Hader claimed his fourth save.

The Brewers visit the Reds again this afternoon. Freddy Peralta will pitch against Luis Castillo.

NHL

Tyler Bertuzzi made history, as the Detroit Red Wings defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-1 last night. Bertuzzi had two goals and an assist, and became the first Red Wing ever to collect three or more points in four consecutive games. Anthony Mantha also scored twice. Jimmy Howard made 38 saves. The Wings have won six straight, and will visit the Penguins tomorrow night. Pregame coverage will begin at 6:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons will host the Indiana Pacers tonight.

Finlandia

The Finlandia University baseball team will play a doubleheader at Wisconsin-Superior today.

The Lions softball team will play two at Ripon College today.

Finlandia softball player Kassandra Avila has been named the American Collegiate Athletic Association Player of the Week. Avila had six hits, scored five runs and stole three bases in the Lions’ doubleheader sweep of Northland College.

The Finlandia softball team has added a new recruit for next season. Briza Saucedo is a pitcher and first baseman from Oxnard, California.

Trails

The Copper Harbor Trails Club will hold its season kickoff Saturday evening at the Continental Fire Company in Houghton. A social period will begin at 5:00, followed by a recap of the 2018 riding season, and a look at plans for this summer. For more details, click here.

The Portage Lake Pioneers and the Calumet Wolverines will wrap up their season in the Gibson Cup series this weekend. Game one will be Friday at 7:30 at the Colosseum.
