The Detroit Tigers’ late comeback fell short in a 5-4 loss to the New York Yankees last night. Matt Boyd pitched five scoreless inning, then gave up a run in the sixth. New York broke open the 1-1 game with four runs in the top of seventh. All were charged to Boyd, who gave up the first, and left with the bases loaded. Bobby Parnell and Kyle Ryan allowed all three inherited runners to score. Detroit came back, scoring a run in the bottom of the seventh, and another in the bottom of the eighth. In the ninth, they loaded the bases against Aroldis Chapman. J.D. Martinez hit a ground ball that seemed to be headed to the outfield. Yankees shortstop Didi Gregorius made a diving stop, flipped the ball with his glove to second base, and turned it into a double play. A run scored on the play to bring Detroit within one, but Miguel Cabrera grounded out to end the game.

After the game, the Tigers sent Ryan down to Toledo, and brought back reliever Blaine Hardy.
