High School

In boys high school basketball last evening…
• Houghton edged Lake Linden-Hubbell 59-57. Matthew Len from the Lakes led all scorers with 24 points.
• Hancock lost to Republic-Michigamme 54-40.
• Ewen-Trout Creek outscored Bessemer 60-34.

In girls action last evening…
• Calumet outscored Jeffers 46-22.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell dispatched Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 63-47.
• Ontonagon shut down Ironwood 39-31.
• Ewen-Trout Creek stopped Bessemer 59-29.

In girls play tonight…
• L’Anse visits Hancock. That game was moved up to tonight from Thursday.

In high school skiing, Houghton competes at the U.P. finals today at Marquette.

College Basketball

Finlandia University’s Natalie Bartle has been named women’s basketball Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year by the Coast to Coast Athletic Conference. She was also named to the All-C2C First Team. In her first year with the Lions, Bartle averaged 21 points and seven rebounds per game. She set school records for steals in a single game, and in a season. Finlandia opens play in the C2C tournament tomorrow. The fourth-seeded Lions will face fifth-seed Salisbury in Fredericksburg, Virginia.

College Volleyball

The Finlandia volleyball team has introduced a new recruit. Kaylee RedBear played at Bark River-Harris High School, and was named to the All-Skyline Conference first team as a senior.

NHL

The Red Wings outscored the Capitals 3-1 last night. Pius Suter scored twice for Detroit, and Robert Hagg netted his first goal of the season.

The Wings host the Rangers tomorrow. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Pistons return from the all-star break when they visit the Magic tomorrow night.

There are reports that Detroit is ready to sign former Magic guard R.J. Hampton. Orlando placed Hampton on waivers yesterday, and can’t officially sign a deal until tomorrow. He was their top pick in the 2020 draft.

MLB

The Brewers added some depth yesterday by signing outfielder Tyler Naquin and first baseman Luke Voit to minor league contracts. Voit blasted 22 home runs for the Padres and Nationals last year, but hit just .226. Naquin hit 11 home runs and batted .229 for the Reds and Mets.
