In the afternoon game, Drew VerHagen was hit hard in a spot start, giving up a run in the third inning, and six more in the fourth, in a 7-4 loss. Mike Fiers pitched into the sixth inning and gave up just two runs as the Tigers took the nightcap 4-2. Leonys Martin had two hits and scored twice.

The Tigers open a three-game series in Boston tonight. Artie Lewicki will pitch against Steven Wright. Pregame coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Milwaukee Brewers had yesterday off, and open a two-game interleague set at Cleveland tonight. Junior Guerra will start against Corey Kluber.

To the surprise of no one, the Detroit Tigers selected Auburn pitcher Casey Mize with the first pick in last night’s Major League Baseball amateur draft. Detroit used the first pick in the second round to take high school outfielder Parker Meadows from Georgia. Parker’s brother, Austin, plays for the Pirates. The Brewers selected high school shortstop Brice Turang with the 21st pick in the first round, and junior college catcher Josh Breaux in the second round. The draft continues today.
