The Detroit Tigers scored twice in the top of the ninth to take a 3-2 lead, only to see the Kansas City Royals score twice in the bottom of the inning to salvage a 4-3 victory last night. Mikie Mahtook’s two-run homer put Detroit in position to win the game, but Justin Wilson couldn’t hold the lead, and suffered his second blown save of the season. Justin Verlander pitched seven strong innings, giving up two runs on six hits, and striking out eight.
The Tigers conclude that series at Kansas City tonight. Michael Fulmer will start against Danny Duffy. Pregame coverage begins at 7:50 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Milwaukee Brewers also took a one-run lead into the ninth, but eventually suffered their fourth straight loss, falling 3-2 to the Pirates. Pittsburgh tied the game with a run off Cory Knebel in the ninth, then won it when Max Moroff’s bloop single drove home Josh Harrison in the bottom of the 10th. Milwaukee starter Zach Davies turned in a good effort, giving up just a run over seven innings. Jared Hughes took the loss in relief.
The Brewers wrap that series at Pittsburgh this afternoon. Jimmy Nelson will pitch against Jameson Taillon.
Fast Pitch Softball
Auto Pro Glass and Tire and Calumet Golf Club/Loading Zone II have advanced to the championship game of the Copper Country Fast Pitch Softball League.
Auto Pro Glass and Tire defeated Mattila Rock and Dock 16-7 in the semifinals last night. Auto Pro took control early, with five runs in the first inning, and six in the second. Sarah Audette was the winning pitcher, with relief help from Morgan Peters. Mel Baker took the loss. Grace Laitila and Shantel Lorenz each had two hits for Mattila. Erin Gast and Kenzie Brunet had two for Auto Pro.
Calumet Golf Club/Loading Zone II held off a late rally, and got past Campioni’s True Value 8-6. Campioni’s loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh. With two outs, Kayley King hit a shot to right field. Molly Larson made an outstanding catch to end the game. Ellie DJerf was the winning pitcher, and King suffered the loss. McKenzie Lapage, Jada Riutta and Alexa Destrampe each had two hits for Calumet Golf Club/Loading Zone II. May Beiring and Ally Spence had two hits apiece for Campioni’s True Value.
The battle for the Holly McCullah Memorial Trophy will be played TONIGHT at 7:00 at the Bone Yard. It had originally been scheduled for Friday, but was changed because of schedule conflicts.
