Justin Verlander and the Astros routed the Tigers 17-4 yesterday. In vintage form, Verlander held Detroit batters to just two hits over five innings, striking out seven. Detroit starter Alex Faedo left in the fifth after giving up three runs. He took the loss, but it was a series of relievers, plus ninth-inning pitcher Zack Short, who gave up 14 runs over the final three innings. Detroit got late home runs from Miguel Cabrera and Zack McKinstry.

The Tigers host the Yankees tonight. Reese Olson will start against Luis Severino. Coverage will begin at 6:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

Detroit rather quietly slipped infielder Isan Díaz through waivers over the weekend, and assigned him to Toledo. The move opens a spot on the team’s 40-player roster.

The Brewers claimed their eighth straight victory yesterday, downing the Padres 10-6. Adrian Houser struggled, giving up four runs over two innings before leaving with tightness in his forearm. Milwaukee came back, and broke the game open with seven runs in the sixth inning. William Contreras homered. Sal Frelick drove in three runs.

The Brewers visit the Cubs tonight. Wade Miley will start against Jameson Taillon.

The Cubs also won yesterday, so Milwaukee’s lead over Chicago in the National League Central Division remains at four games.
