Local high school athletic directors have issued the guidelines for spectators at high school volleyball and middle school girls basketball contests this fall. Executive orders issued by Governor Gretchen Whitmer limit game attendance to 25 percent of the facility’s capacity, or 250 people, whichever is smaller. That includes players, officials, coaches, staff members, administrators and fans. In order to comply, only parents and guardians of athletes will be allowed to attend the contests. Vouchers will be issued to parents on a game by game basis, and must be presented in order to purchase a ticket for admission. Per MHSAA rules, all spectators must wear a mask and practice social distancing while attending athletic contests. Some schools have set up video streaming of events. Contact your school for details.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers had yesterday off, and begin a series in Milwaukee tonight.

Orlando Arcia singled home Ben Gamel with the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning, as the Milwaukee Brewers edged the Pittsburgh Pirates 65 last night. Keston Hiura homered for the Crew.

Coverage of tonight’s Tigers-Brewers game begins at 7:15 on 99.3 The Lift. Michael Fulmer will pitch against Josh Lindblom.

The Tigers traded outfielder Cameron Maybin to the Chicago Cubs. In exchange, they get infielder Zack Short, who is ranked as Chicago’s number-21 prospect. It’s the third time that the Tigers have traded Maybin in his career.

Detroit also claimed pitcher Dereck Rodríguez off waivers from the San Francisco Giants. He is the son of former Tigers catcher Iván Rodríguez.

The Brewers sent reliever David Phelps to the Phillies, in exchange for three prospects who will be named later.

NFL

Detroit Lions head coach Matt Patricia appears to be ready to give up his duties calling defensive plays. New defensive coordinator Cory Undlin revealed over the weekend that he will work the games on the sideline, and will call the defensive plays. Patricia spent six years as the New England Patriots’ defensive coordinator before becoming Detroit’s head coach. He took over the defensive play calling late last season, as the unit performed poorly, then fired defensive coordinator Paul Pasqualoni after the season.

College

The vote by Big Ten university presidents to postpone the fall football season was 11-3. The revelation came yesterday in a court filing in a lawsuit brought by a group of University of Nebraska players who want the season reinstated. The votes were not attributed to specific colleges, but there are reports that the schools that wanted to play were Iowa, Nebraska and Ohio State.
