Anderson Scores Five Times as Kings Rout ‘Dogs – Saturday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school football last night…
• Calumet buried Hancock 53-12. The Copper Kings scored on every possession except the final kneel down. Cam Anderson ran 327 yards on 31 carries, and scored five touchdowns. Alan Bjorn and Ben Anderson each scored once, and Kent Koskela caught a late 12-yard scoring toss from Erik Loukus. Bulldogs’ quarterback Bryce Hanner completed second-half touchdown passes to Luke Mikkola and Zach Geborkoff. Hear the game replay here.
• Houghton fell to Gladstone 31-8. The Gremlins hung tough early, trailing just 11-8 at halftime, before the Braves pulled away. Houghton’s touchdown came after a 50-yard Trevor Erva kickoff return. Facing second-and-six at the Braves 21-yard line, Wyatt Jenkins ran the ball inside the 10, then lateraled it back to Jace DeForge who scampered into the endzone. Oscar Peterson’s pass on the two-point conversion attempt was tipped, but landed in Jenkins’ arms in the endzone.
• Iron Mountain’s game at L’Anse was canceled.
• Ontonagon lost at Forest Park 48-13.

In football this afternoon…
• Lake Linden-Hubbell hosts Ironwood for Homecoming at 1:30.

In volleyball today…
• Houghton competes at the Escanaba Invitational.

College Football

The Michigan Tech football team plays at Wayne State today.

The Northern Michigan football team visits 16th-ranked Davenport University.

College Volleyball

The MTU volleyball team swept Purdue Northwest 3-0 (25-14, 25-18, 25-23) last evening. Lindy Oujiri had 13 kills, Tess Hayes recorded 31 assists, and Amelia Albers had 15 digs. The Huskies host Parkside this afternoon at 3.

The NMU volleyball squad fell 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-19) to Parkside last night, and will entertain Purdue Northwest today.

College Soccer

The Tech soccer team played to a 1-1 draw with Northern Michigan last evening. Seulgi Lee scored early for the Huskies. The Wildcats salvaged the tie when Molly Pistorius found the net in the 88th minute.

The NMU men’s team lost to Parkside 2-1 yesterday afternoon, and entertains Purdue Northwest tomorrow.

NHL

The Red Wings will host the Maple Leafs for their final preseason contest this evening. Listen for regular-season Wings games on 99.3 The Lift.

Detroit made a number of roster cuts yesterday. They include former Michigan Tech forward Joel L’Esperance, who was assigned to the Grand Rapids Griffins, where he played 72 games last season. Former NMU standout Dominick Shine was also placed with Grand Rapids, where he has spent the past six seasons.

MLB

The second round of the baseball playoffs begins today.

In the American League…
• The Orioles host the Rangers.
• The Twins visit the Astros.

In the National League…
• The Braves host the Phillies.
• The Dodgers welcome the Diamondbacks.

Former Tigers outfielder Wayne Comer has died. Comer played five seasons in the majors – three with Detroit. He’s best remembered as the player who was called up from Toledo to help fill in after Al Kaline broke his arm during the 1968 championship season. He was selected by the Seattle Pilots in the 1969 expansion draft.

NFL

The Lions host the Panthers in a 1:00 game tomorrow on 99.3 The Lift. Receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown is listed as doubtful with an ab injury. Running back Jahmyr Gibbs is questionable and tight end James Mitchell is doubtful, as they nurse hamstring injuries. Receiver Jameson Williams is listed as questionable, following his return from suspension. Brian Branch will not play, because of an ankle injury.

The Packers visit the Raiders in Monday night’s contest on 99.3 The Lift. Tackle David Bakhtiari confirmed yesterday that he will undergo knee surgery, and miss the rest of the season.
