At the 7th grade boys basketball tournament in Lake Linden yesterday…
– Houghton won the Division II championship with a narrow 28-27 victory over Chassell. Shawn Ruotsala scored 10 points for the Gremlins. Chassell’s Bereket Gockenbach scored 17.
– Calumet defeated Hancock 41-22 in the Division I championship game. Calumet’s Brevin Antilla led all scorers with 19 points. Austin Salani and Carson Chynoweth each had 13 for the Bulldogs.

Finlandia
The Finlandia men’s basketball team lost at Manchester University in Indiana 93-70 yesterday afternoon. Jordan LaPlante led the Lions with 17 points. Brandon Robinette added 15 points and eight rebounds.

Michigan Tech volleyball players Jacqueline Aird and Lauren Emmert share the honor as the team’s most valuable players. The team awards were announced yesterday. Rachel Pohlod was named  the most improved player, and Noelle Eveland earned the scholastic award. Aird was also named the digger of the year. She holds Tech’s all-time single-season and career digs records. Emmert and Pohlod were voted co-captains for the 2016 season by the team.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons hit five of six free throws in the closing 20 seconds, and edged the Boston Celtics 119-116 last night. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope scored a career-best 31 points. The Pistons visit the Chicago Bulls tomorrow night.

Brandon Jennings could be back on the court Saturday – but not for Detroit. Jennings is recovering from a torn Achilles tendon. He’ll likely see his first action in early 11 months as part of a rehab assignment with Detroit’s Grand Rapids Drive D-League team.

The Detroit Red Wings return to action tomorrow night, when they host the Vancouver Canucks. Faceoff is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
