There’s a big change at the top of the Northern Michigan University hockey program.
Head coach Grant Potulny has stepped down after seven seasons at the helm. Potulney led the Wildcates to four 20-win seasons, but the 2023-2024 team finished with a sub-.500 record of 12-16-6.
A press release from the NMU athletic department indicated that Potulny intends to pursue opportunities at the professional level.
Former coach and current athletic director Rick Comley has been appointed interim coach. Comley was the founding head coach of the Wildcats’ hockey team. In his 26 seasons at NMU, he led the team to the 1991 NCAA Division I championship.
A committee will be formed to find candidates to fill the position permanently. Comley said it will include former NMU players, and that the public will get to meet all the finalists before a decision is made.
