• Houghton swept Calumet 13-7 and 11-8. Estella Soumis struck out six for the Gremlins in game one. She, Romi Mattson and Mackenzie Collard each had three hits. Chloe Coppo and Lena Myhren each had three hits for the Copper Kings. Clea Ollanketo had four hits, including a home run. Brynn Arko also hit a home run. Romi Mattson struck out eight in the nightcap, and Jacey Sleeman had three hits for Houghton. Coppo homered for Calumet.
• Hancock defeated the Escanaba JV team 13-9 and 10-0. Megan Pelto and Kaelyn Rouleau each had two hits in the opener. Sydney Scholie tossed a five-inning one-hitter in the nightcap. Brooke Koskela had three hits, including a home run.

The Houghton girls soccer team v Iron Mountain yesterday – no report.
At yesterday’s Copper Country Track and Field Invitational yesterday…
• Houghton won the boys title, with Lake Linden-Hubbell a close second. Ironwood finished third, followed by Calumet, Dollar Bay-Tamarack City, Chassell, Baraga, Ontonagon, Jeffers and L’Anse. Houghton’s Brody Mattila took the 110-meter hurdles and the long jump. Matthew Jokela of the Lakes won the 200 and 400-meter dashes.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell claimed the girls crown, with Houghton a close second. Calumet took third, followed by Dollar Bay-Tamarack City, Hancock, Ironwood, Baraga, Ewen-Trout Creek, Ontonagon, Jeffers and Chassell. Emily Jokela of the Lakes won the 100, 200 and 400-meter dashes, and the 300-meter hurdles. Caitlyn Strom from Calumet took the long jump and the pole vault.

• The Hurricanes scored four times in the third period, and beat the Rangers 4-1. New York leads that Eastern Conference series 3-2.
• The Stars stopped the Avalanche 5-1. Dallas leads that Western Conference series 3-1.

• The Panthers host the Bruins. Florida leads that Eastern Conference series 3-1.
• The Oilers welcome the Canucks. Vancouver is up 2-1 in that Western Conference series.

In NBA Conference semifinal play last evening…
• The Celtics got past the Cavaliers 109-102. Boston leads that Eastern Conference series 3-1.
• The Thunder slipped past the Mavericks 100-96. That Western Conference set is tied 2-2.

• The Knicks welcome the Pacers. That Eastern Conference series is tied 2-2.
• The Nuggets entertain the Timberwolves. That Western Conference series is knotted 2-2.
MLB
The Tigers scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, and shaded the Marlins 6-5 last night. The game was tied at three until Miami scored twice off Alex Faedo in the top of the eighth. Detroit’s comeback a half-inning later started with an Andy Ibáñez RBI single, and ended with a massive 446-foot two-run homer by Spencer Torkelson.
The Tigers host the Marlins again tonight. Reese Olson will start against Ryan Weathers. Coverage will begin at 6:15 on 99.3 The Lift.
Detroit has placed reliever Shelby Miller on the injured list with an inflamed nerve in his elbow. Beau Brieske has been called up from Toledo to fill in.
The Brewers’ late comeback fell short in an 8-6 loss to the Pirates last evening. Jake Bauers’ grand slam in the bottom of the eighth narrowed the gap to two, but that was as close as The Crew could get.
The Brewers entertain the Pirates again tonight. Joe Ross will start against Quinn Priester.
Rhys Hoskins left last night’s contest in the second inning, after tweaking a hamstring. He’ll be evaluated today. Joel Payamps returned after time on the bereavement list. Janson Junk has been returned to Nashville.
NFL
The Lions have locked up quarterback Jared Goff for the next five seasons. Goff was already under contract for next season. Reports are that he and the team have agreed to a four-year extension worth $212 million, with $170 million guaranteed. He becomes the highest-paid Lion ever, and the second-highest paid NFL quarterback, behind Cincinnati’s Joe Burrow.
