Houghton Completes Wing Ding Sweep – Saturday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school hockey last evening…
• Houghton completed a sweep of this year’s Wing Ding series with a 5-0 victory over Hancock. Connor Raffaelli scored twice for the Gremlins, and Mike Maillette, Jack Sayen and Jack Rudak each found the net once. Bryant Lee made 16 saves for Houghton. Dan Wroblewski stopped 27 of 32 shots for the Bulldogs. Hear the game replay here.
• Jeffers fell 2-0 to Rochester Stoney Creek at the Cheboygan Showcase.

• Jeffers takes on Gladwin at the Cheboygan Showcase.

In boys basketball last night…
• Calumet downed West Iron County 45-32.
• Dollar Bay-Tamarack City raced past L’Anse 81-41.
• Jeffers pounded Republic-Michigamme 100-27. Damien Heikkinan led the Jets with 21 points. Levi Frahm added 20, Lincoln Just 17, and Malaki Mattila scored 10.
• Chassell outscored Bessemer 58-43. Oliver Campbell led the Panthers with 16 points, Mason Loukus scored 12 and Grady Olson had 10.
• Ontonagon fell to Wakefield-Marenisco 59-30.

On the girls schedule…
• Calumet lost a 50-49 squeaker to Escanaba.
• Baraga downed Jeffers 41-31. Makenna Hendrickson scored 16 points for the Vikings. Rita Isaacson led the Jets with 10.
• Chassell slipped past Bessemer 50-47.

College Basketball

Both Michigan Tech basketball teams entertain Parkside today – the women at noon, and the men at 2:00.

Both NMU squads welcome Purdue Northwest.

College Hockey

The Michigan Tech hockey team skated to a 3-1 victory over Minnesota State in the opening game of the annual Winter Carnival Series last night. Ryland Mosely got the Huskies off to a quick start, with a goal just 66 seconds into the contest. After the Mavericks tied the contest, Logan Pietila netted the game-winner in the second period. Jed Pietila added a late empty-netter. Blake Pietila made 31 saves. Those teams face off again tonight at 5:07 at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena.

The Northern Michigan hockey team fell 4-2 to Bemidji State last evening. Kevin Marx Noren and Grant Slukynsky scored for the Wildcats. Beni Halasz made 26 saves.

GLHL

The Portage Lake Pioneers entertain the Eagle River Falcons tonight at 9:00 at Dee Stadium.

The Calumet Wolverines have the weekend off.

NHL

The Red Wings return from the all-star break this afternoon, when they host the Canucks. Coverage will start at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Pistons will try to extend their two-game winning streak when they call on the Clippers this afternoon.

MLB

Former Tigers pitcher Michael Fulmer has reportedly signed a deal with the Red Sox. Fulmer is recovering from Tommy John ligament replacement surgery, and won’t be able to pitch this season. Boston officials anticipate he’ll be ready for next season.

NFL

The Chiefs and 49ers will meet in the Super Bowl tomorrow evening. Hear the broadcast on 99.3 The Lift.
