MLB – Yankees Rock Price, Tigers
The New York Yankees ripped David Price for six runs in the top of the first inning, and pounded the Detroit Tigers 13-4 last night. Detroit responded with four runs in the bottom of the first, but that was all they got. New York added two in the second off Price, two in the fourth off Angel Nesbitt, and three in the seventh of Al Alburquerque.
The Tigers wrap up that home set against the Yankees this afternoon. Anibal Sanchez will start against Masahiro Tanaka. Hear the first pitch at 1:08 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.
Detroit closer Joe Nathan took the mound in a rehab game with the Toledo Mudhens yesterday, but left the game after feeling a “pop” in his right elbow. Nathan was examined after the game. No results have been released, and his trip back to the Tigers is on hold.
Jimmy Nelson of the Brewers and Johnny Cueto of the Reds each surrendered a run in the first inning… then settled into a pitchers’ duel that Cincinnati eventually won, 2-1. Each pitcher worked through the eighth. Nelson gave up just three hits, and Cueto five. The Reds scored the winning run in the top of the ninth, when Billy Hamilton raced home on a Francisco Rodriguez wild pitch.
The Brewers conclude that home set against the Reds this afternoon. Kyle Lohse will pitch against Homer Bailey.
NHL – Red Wings Prepare for Game Four
The Detroit Red Wings host the Tampa Bay Lightning in game four of their opening-round NHL playoff series tonight. Petr Mrazek will start in goal for Detroit. The Wings lead the best-of-seven series two games to one. Face-off is at 7:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.
Finlandia Adds Two Volleyball Players; MTU One
Hancock volleyball player Ashley Boomer has committed to join the team at Finlandia University next season. At 6’2”, Boomer has experience as an attacker on the right side, and in the middle. Boomer will be joined on the Lions’ team by Julianiz Rodriguez, from Puerto Rico. Rodriguez has played for only a year or so, but coach Kristan Schuster says she’s very athletic. Schuster met her while working at a volleyball camp in Puerto Rico.
The Michigan Tech volleyball squad got a commitment from Mariah Sherman of Midland. Sherman is a 6’0” front row player, and was last season’s Most Valuable Player in the Saginaw Valley League.
Softball Game Delayed
The Jeffers at Lake Linden-Hubbell girls softball game scheduled for this afternoon has been postponed. No make-up date has been set.
NFL – Jennings Signs with ‘Fins
Former Green Bay Packers’ wide receiver Greg Jennings has reportedly signed a two-year contract with the Miami Dolphins. Jennings was recently released by Minnesota, where he had played for two seasons since leaving Green Bay.
