The Houghton and Jeffers baseball teams, and the Hancock softball team won district titles yesterday.
In baseball…
• In Division Three at Iron Mountain…
– Houghton got past Iron Mountain 5-3 in the first semifinal.
– Calumet fell to Negaunee 9-1 in the second semifinal.
– Houghton blanked Negaunee 10-0 in the championship game.
The Gremlins will face Gladstone Wednesday at 4:00 at Gladstone in the regional semifinal. Coverage will begin at 3:40 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf.
• In Division Four at Ironwood…
– Ironwood ousted Ontonagon 12-4 in the first semifinal.
– Jeffers dispatched Lake Linden-Hubbell 16-3 in the second semifinal.
– The Jets eliminated Ironwood 13-2 in the title game.
Jeffers will play Norway in the regional semifinal Wednesday. That game is scheduled to be played at Ironwood.
In softball…
• In Division Three at Westwood…
– Calumet surprised Houghton 10-8 in the first semifinal.
– Negaunee dispatched Westwood 11-4 in the second semifinal.
– The Miners defeated the Copper Kings 13-5 in the title game.
• In Division Four, at the Hancock Driving Park…
– Baraga fell to Gogebic 14-13 in the first semifinal.
– Hancock mercied L’Anse 18-0 in the second semifinal.
– The Bulldogs blanked the Miners 6-0 in the championship match. Hancock will face Pickford in the regional semifinal next Saturday at Norway.
Today, the U.P. Track and Field Finals will be held at Kingsford.
College Hockey
The Finlandia University men’s hockey team has added a new recruit. Zach Zeidel is a forward from Chicago, who played for the Northern Cyclones Premier team in New Hampshire last season.
NHL
In the NHL playoffs last night, the Rangers edged the Lightning 3-2. New York leads the Eastern Conference final 2-0, with game three set for tomorrow in Tampa.
The Western Conference final continues tonight, as the Oilers host the Avalanche. Colorado leads the series 2-0.
NBA
Game two of the NBA championship series between the Celtics and Warriors will be played tomorrow night in Oakland. The Celtics won the opening match Thursday.
MLB
The Tigers suffered an ugly 13-0 loss to the Yankees last night. Elvin Rodriguez gave up five runs in the first four innings, then left as New York plated seven runners in the fifth. Harold Castro came in from left field to pitch the ninth, and gave up a run on two hits.
The Tigers play at New York again today. Beau Brieske will pitch against Luis Severino. Coverage will begin at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Brewers fell 7-0 to the Padres last night. Corbin Burnes struggled into the fourth inning, giving up five runs.
The Brewers host the Padres again this afternoon. Aaron Ashby will start against MacKenzie Gore.
Luis Urías left yesterday’s game after aggravating a thumb injury. He’ll be evaluated today. Mike Brosseau has been placed on the injured list with a sprained ankle, and Pablo Reyes has been called up from Nashville to fill in. The Brewers also sent pitcher Peter Strzelecki back to Nashville, and brought up pitcher Luke Barker and catcher Alex Jackson.
