Houghton Softball Sweeps; Baseball Splits with Hancock – Saturday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school baseball yesterday…
• Houghton and Hancock split their doubleheader. In the opener, Kade Farrell tossed a one-hitter and had four hits in a 12-0 Gremlins victory. The nightcap was a 14-13 victory for the Bulldogs, in a game played mostly by JV players. Luke Milkkola had a single, a double, and a triple for Hancock.

Today…
• Houghton plays at Iron Mountain.

In high school softball yesterday…
• Houghton swept Iron Mountain 18-5 and 17-1.
• Calumet at Ishpeming – no report.
• Hancock at Ironwood – no report.

At the Lakes Invitational yesterday…
• Dollar Bay-Tamarack City edged Lake Linden-Hubbell to win the boys’ meet. Baraga was a distant third, followed by Jeffers, Chassell and Hancock. Chase Benson of the Blue Bolts won the 100 and 200-meter dashes. Nik Thomas claimed the 400, 800, 1600 and 3200-meter runs. A.J. Datto swept the 110 and 300-meter hurdles, and won the long jump. • Baraga outscored Dollar Bay-Tamarack City to take the girls meet. Lake Linden-Hubbell was third, followed by Hancock, Chassell and Jeffers. For the Lakes, Emily Jokela won the 200 and 400-meter runs and the 300-meter hurdles. Abi Codere took the 100-meter hurdles and the pole vault. Hancock’s Ella Keranen won the 1600 and 3200-meter runs. See full results here.

Houghton, Calumet and L’Anse at the Ontonagon Invitational – no report.

College Baseball

The Finlandia University baseball team lost two at Wisconsin-Stout yesterday, 7-0 and 6-2. The Lions got just one hit in the opener. In the second contest, Jacob Mead scored his 24th run of the season, tying a school record. The Lions play two more at Wisconsin-Stout today.

College Soccer

The Finlandia men’s soccer team has added a new player. Ryan Stanley was a four-year starter at Indian Rocks Christian School in Saint Petersburg, Florida.

NHL

NHL opening-round playoff action continued last night.

In the Eastern Conference…
• The Bruins downed the Hurricanes 4-2. Carolina leads that series 2-1.
• The Maple Leafs dumped the Lightning 5-2. Toronto leads that set 2-1.

In the Western Conference…
• The Oilers routed the Kings 8-2. Edmonton is up 2-1 in that set.
• The Wild shut down the Blues 5-1. Minnesota leads that series 2-1.

In the Eastern Conference today…
• The Capitals host the Panthers. That series is tied 1-1.
• The Penguins welcome the Rangers. That set is tied 1-1.

In the Western Conference today…
• The Avalanche visit the Predators. Colorado leads that set 2-0.
• The Stars welcome the Flames. That set is knotted 1-1.

NBA

The NBA conference semifinal playoffs resumed last night…
• In the Eastern Conference, the 76ers turned down the Heat 99-79. Miami leads that series 2-1.
• In the Western Conference, the Mavericks shaded the Suns 103-94. Phoenix is up 2-1 in that set.

Today…
• In the Eastern Conference, the Celtics visit the Bucks. That series is tied 1-1.
• In the Western Conference, the Warriors host the Grizzlies. That set is tied 1-1.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers’ struggles continued with a 3-2 loss to the Houston Astros last night. Beau Brieske went five innings. He gave up all three Houston runs on a pair of homers in the third. Detroit collected just two hits.

The Tigers visit the Astros again this afternoon. Eduardo Rodriguez will start against Framber Valdez. Coverage will begin at 3:45 on 99.3 The Lift. 

The Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Atlanta Braves 6-3 last evening. Eric Lauer pitched into the seventh, and gave up two runs on two hits while striking out eight. Rowdy Tellez had two hits and drove in two runs.

The Brewers play at Atlanta again tonight. Corbin Burnes will pitch against Max Fried.

Before the game, Milwaukee brought reliever Luis Perdomo up from Nashville, and sent down infielder Keston Hiura.
