In high school baseball Saturday…

College Baseball

The Finlandia University baseball team’s doubleheader at Wisconsin-Eau Claire Saturday was postponed. The Lions and BluGolds will play two today, and two more tomorrow.

College Softball

The Finlandia softball team was able to get one game in Saturday, and claim one victory for the 2022 season, defeating Gogebic Community College 15-7 at McAfee Field. Shyann Vernam was the winning pitcher, and had four hits and drove in four runs. Alex Berg had four hits and four RBI, and Sarah Moir had three hits and three RBI. The Lions finish their campaign with a record of 1-26.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings will not renew the contract of head coach Jeff Blashill. He leaves the team after seven seasons. The Wings also announced that assistant coach Doug Houda and goaltending coach Jeff Salajko will not return next season. The move was widely expected, after the team struggled through the final half of the NHL season.

NBA

The NBA conference semifinals begin today.

In the Eastern Conference…
• The Milwaukee Bucks visit the Boston Celtics.

In the Western Conference…
• The Memphis Grizzlies host the Golden State Warriors.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers snapped their sixth game losing streak Saturday night with a 5-1 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers. Starter Beau Brieske gave up a solo homer in the first inning, then allowed jut two more hits through the fifth. Javier Báez singled home Derek Hill to tie the game in the third inning, then doubled home Jeimer Candelario in the seventh to give Detroit the lead. Auston Meadows’s two-run single in the seventh, and Tucker Barnhardt’s RBI double in the eighth completed the scoring.

The Tigers conclude that series in Los Angeles this afternoon. Eduardo Rodriguez will start against Walker Buehler. Coverage will begin at 3:50 on 99.3 The Lift. 

The Milwaukee Brewers pounded the Chicago Cubs 9-1 Saturday evening. Eric Lauer gave up a run over seven innings, and struck out 11. Rowdy Tellez, Christian Yelich and Hunter Renfroe homered.

The Brewers host the Cubs again this afternoon. Corbin Burnes will start against Marcus Stroman.

NFL

On day three of the NFL Draft…
• The Detroit Lions added Virginia tight end James Mitchell in the fifth round, Oklahoma State linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez and Jackson State linebacker James Houston in the sixth round, and Arizona State cornerback Chase Lucas in the seventh round.
• The Green Bay Packers claimed Nevada receiver Romeo Dubbs in the fourth round, and South Carolina linebacker Kingsley Enagbare in the fifth. With four seventh-round picks, the Pack took Georgia Tech linebacker Tariq Carpenter, Miami defensive tackle Jonathan Ford, Penn State offensive tackle Rasheed Walker, and Nebraska receiver Samori Toure.
