HS Baseball, Softball Seasons Finally in Gear – Saturday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school baseball yesterday…
• Calumet swept the Gogebic Miners 9-4 and 14-7. Dryden Nelson led the Copper Kings with five hits, four stolen bases and seven RBI’s. Lars Peterson added four hits and five RBI’s. Braydon Cima and Alex Tarnowski shared the pitching in game one, giving up just three hits. Tarnowski, Ben Frantti and Carter Kilpela pitched in game two, giving up eight hits.
• Jeffers split their games against Iron Mountain, falling 6-3 in the opener, and taking the nightcap 18-13. Cody Turner was the winning pitcher in game two.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell v Pellston – no report.

On the baseball schedule today…
• Calumet travels to Gladstone.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell plays at a tournament at Hillman.

In softball yesterday…
• Hancock split a pair with Iron Mountain, dropping the opener 6-3, then taking the nightcap 15-1.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell took both of their games from L’Anse, 13-3 and 17-0. Kara Kinnunen got the win in the opener. Emily Jokela blasted two doubles and two triples for the Lakes. Kaylee Lahti had a double for the Purple Hornets. Jokela earned the shutout win in the second contest. Kara Kinnunen had two hits, including a double. Marissa Sullivan and Olivia Shank also doubled for Lake Linden.
• Calumet swept Baraga 17-3 and 20-7. In the first game, Grace Newman struck out five, and earned the win. Helen Beiring had three hits, including a double and drove in four runs for the Copper Kings. Corey Jafehston had an inside the park home run for the Vikings. Kaylee Halonen earned the win for Calumet in game two. Ashlee Johnson paced the Copper Kings with three hits, including a double and two RBI’s. Jana Loukus had two hits, including a triple. Jafehston had a three run homer for Baraga.

College Baseball

The Finlandia University baseball team plays doubleheaders at Wisconsin-Eau Claire today and tomorrow.

College Softball

The Finlandia softball team wraps up its season at home against Gogebic Community College this afternoon. Doubleheader coverage will begin at 3:40 on the Voice of the Lions, 99.3 The Lift.

College Track

Michigan Tech runner Clayton Sayen set a new 1500-meter school record Thursday night at the Drake Relays. The former Houghton High School standout finished in second place amongst a field of 27, and has a good chance of qualifying for the NCAA Outdoor Championships.

NBA

Opening-round NBA tournament play concluded last evening.

In the Western Conference…
• The Memphis Grizzlies eliminated the Minnesota Timberwolves 114-106. Memphis takes that series 4-2.

Conference semifinals will begin tomorrow.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings closed their season with a 5-2 victory over the New Jersey Devils last night. Goalie Magnus Hellberg earned his first NHL win in five years, stopping 20 shots. Hellberg signed a free agent contract with Detroit earlier this month, after playing five seasons in the Russian Kontinental League. Michael Rasmussen, Moritz Seider, Joe Veleno, Pius Suter and Tyler Bertuzzi scored for the Wings, who end their campaign with a record of 32-40-10.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers lost their sixth straight game last night, 6-1 to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Tyler Alexander took the loss, giving up four runs before leaving in the third inning.

The Tigers continue that series in Los Angeles tonight. Beau Brieske will start against Clayton Kershaw. Coverage will begin at 9:50 on 99.3 The Lift. 

The Milwaukee Brewers routed the Chicago Cubs 11-1. Adrian Houser tossed six shutout innings. Hunter Renfroe hit two home runs, and Jace Peterson, Andrew McCutcheon, Christian Yeloch and Willy Adames each blasted one out.

The Brewers host the Cubs again this evening. Eric Lauer will start against Justin Steele.

NFL

On day two of the NFL Draft…
• The Detroit Lions selected University of Kentucky defensive end Josh Paschal in the second round, and added University of Illinois safety Kerby Joseph in the third.
• The Green Bay Packers traded up to take North Dakota State receiver Christian Watson in the second round, and then picked UCLA offensive lineman Sean Rhyan in the third.

The final rounds will be held today.
