Tigers Fall, but Cabrera Reaches 2,999 – Thursday Sports Wrap

College Soccer

The Finlandia University men’s soccer team has added a new recruit. Nicholas Dipaola was a four-year captain of his club team in Niagara Falls, Ontario.

NBA

Opening-round NBA tournament play continued last night.

In the Eastern Conference…
• The Boston Celtics got past the Brooklyn Nets 114-107. Boston leads that series 2-0.
• The Philadelphia 76ers edged the Toronto Raptors 104-101 in overtime. Philly takes a 3-0 lead in that set.
• The Chicago Bulls slipped past the Milwaukee Bucks 114-110. That series is tied 1-1.

In the Western Conference tonight…
• The Minnesota Timberwolves host the Memphis Grizzlies. That series is knotted 1-1.
• The Dallas Mavericks visit the Utah Jazz. That set is also tied 1-1.
• The Denver Nuggets entertain the Golden State Warriors. Golden State is up 2-0 in that series.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings visit the Florida Panthers tonight. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers dropped their third straight game last night, 5-3 to the New York Yankees. Eduardo Rodriguez gave up three runs over six innings. He left trailing 3-1, but Detroit scored two in the bottom of the sixth on a Harold Castro double to tie the game. Drew Hutchison gave up a run in the top of the seventh, and took the loss. The Yankees added another in the eighth off Joe Jiménez.

Miguel Cabrera had three singles, and is now just one hit away from the 3,000 mark for his career.

Those teams play in Detroit again this afternoon. Michael Pineda will make his Tigers debut against Jordan Montgomery. Coverage begins at 12:50 on 99.3 The Lift.

Injuries continue to plague the Tigers. Starting pitcher Matt Manning has been placed on the 10-day list because of shoulder inflammation. Rookie Angel De Jesus has been called up from Toledo.

Manning joins fellow pitchers Andrew Chafin, Kyle Funkhauser and Casey Mize on the sideline, along with infielder Javier Báez and outfielder Derek Hill.

The Milwaukee Brewers won their fourth straight game yesterday, defeating the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-2. Brandon Woodruff struck out nine over six shutout innings, and gave up just one hit. Rowdy Tellez and Keston Hiura homered.

The Brewers have today off, and open a series in Philadelphia tomorrow night. Freddy Peralta will start against Ranger Suarez.
